Thumbs up Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island

I got this last week and it's pretty good! Not as fucking brilliant as Aeroplane Over The Sea, but it's still quite a good record. The vocals seem a bit far back in the mix and not as up-front as they should be in my opinion. There's a lot of air organ on this record... Song Against Sex, April 8th and Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone are all great songs, though. There's a new Neutral Milk Hotel demo that surfaced not long ago (supposedly recorded at the same time as Everything Is) with this awesome version of April 8th that's much better than the On Avery Island version...

Well, anyways, you don't see many posts about this album, so here's one.

Yeah someone told me it was only half great so I didn't listen to it right after hearing In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. I am never going to listen to people ever again. It's a great record. My personal favorite is Naomi.

I've got to buy that and the others. I always forget about NMH when I go into a record store.

Yes, that's exactly it! It's like hearing Sgt. Pepper first, then never getting around to listening to Help!. But Help! is a great recrod and deserves your attention also...

On Avery Island still has the Neutral Milk Hotel sound to it... Mangum's unique songwriting and vocal style, acoustic guitar, fuzz bass, air organ and trumpet... but no zanzithophone. As I had said, not every song is a gem like on Aeroplane, but there's a number of songs that are worth the price alone. And yes, Naomi is a great song, but the vocals are to far back for me to enjoy it... What I really want is a bootleg of this tour with the Aeroplane band lineup performing the Avery Island Songs... The Mangum/Koster/Spillane/Barnes lineup.

My next buy would be the Jeff mangum live at Jittery Joes disc... I have a track from that on an Orange Twin sampler (aka present-day Elephant 6 sampler) and it sounds sweet as fuck! I'm also trying to track down The Music Tapes, Major Organ and The Adding Machine and the two Gerbils albums...

I think all I listen to know is Elephant 6.

Consider yourself lucky if all that occurs as a result of that is extraneous "k"s.

What's the new demo called? Is it available in stores?

No no no... It's a bootleg. Mp3s surfaced mysteriously on Soulseek incorrectly labeled as the Synthetic Flying Machine demo. Will Cullen Hart verified that it is *not* Synthetic Flying Machine, but just Jeff Mangum. On the demo is the same recordings of "Everything Is" and "Aunt Egma's Blowtorch" that are on that single, so I assume this is the demo tape that Jeff gave China Doll records in Seattle that got him the single deal. The more awesome version of "April 8th" is on there and a handful of totally unknown and unheard songs.

You can download mp3s of it at: http://www.everythingisfire.com/nmh.html
That site also has the first three demo tapes (Invent Yourself A Shortcake, Beauty and Hype City Soundtrack) for yer listening pleasure!
