Have you ever had them? It's not really all that painful or anything, and it's worth it to go camping in the Appalachians, which are gorgeous.

If you get them all over yourself, I imagine that would indeed suck, but if you're smart and take the necessary precautions you just wind up like in this thread--maybe five, six bites, nothing that can't be taken care of in a few days.

well bites are fine. I got shitloads of them in central america. but just the thought of animals burying in my skin is disgusting as hell. like ticks.

Seriously. If you're an outdoorsy person and you live in Appalachia, you'll get them. They aren't that bad. I'd take them over mosquito or horsefly bites.
