Default Ratemyprofessors.com is a blessing and a curse.

So I'm trying to find the best math teacher to take for a math course and it's all mostly negative reviews of math teachers. I can't find a good math teacher.

Do you guys use ratemyprofessors.com to help you make your decisions about what teachers to take and if so did you find it helpful or hurtful?

yeah i use it all the time. but it's frustrating because everyone's comments are always: "the class was really hard, but the professor was one of the best i've had." i'd rather take an easy class with a shitty prof.

i've never used it as a way to sample my prospective profs, but i have gone back and see how my opinions match up with the masses. i find that most of the reviews are really shallow. like if the prof has a great method but just happens to be a fucking prick, then most of the feedback with focus on him being a prick. i find with math especially it's better to have a prof that knows their shit and can make you understand it than one who is funny or likeable. try to dig assessments of the prof's teaching ability out of the shallow personality hangups, if there's a good sample of reviews it should be doable.

I always hated people like you while in college. You're paying for education, not a free ride.

I have a problem with this and every other site on the net that lets users post any kind of review. People will always tend to report bad things. Also the people who tend to use sites liek this are the people who will ahte something for a stupid reason. For example a few months ago I bought a vaxum cleaner, it was 100$ the least expensive model this particular company makes, the thing is hands down the best vacum cleaner I ahve ever used. I read reviews of it online and people bash it because it's not sturdy and it's cheap looking, guess what idiot you bought the cheap model, of course it's going to be cheap looking. People will give things bad reviews for the stupidest reasons.

I just looked up some of my old profs -- I found most of the reviews to be rather shallow and lame, though some were good. You really need to meet the person yourself to know if you like them.

I've checked on some of my old professors out of curiosity but I usually ask around to see if anybody has had them.
