not at all. people focus on the processor speed, but the matter of fact is that a great video card can carry a lacking processor on its back sometimes.

i laughed at his response because he left out the most important piece of information - the video card.

I've always assumed it's a minor epeliptic reaction to it, and I'm not even sure that there are varying degrees of epilepsy. To be honest, I don't think it's severe enough to warrant a visit to the doctor, and I think as long as I stay away from first person shooters, I'll be fine.

I typically have no problem playing action games with a 3rd person camera view. I could play those for hours. It's just that playing games like halo where you are constantly turning around and looking up and down and whathaveyou, it makes me really fucking dizzy and i start to sweat. It's really kind of depressing.

The Video card needs info from the processor. If the processor is to slow you can have the fastest card in the world and it wont matter.

while it's certainly true that many games are CPU-limited, by no means is the GPU (and yes, it's pretty much a processor now) simply at the mercy of the CPU. i witnessed this first hand when i took my aging p3 733 and threw a geforce3 in it. i've been using that rig for 4 years (3 with the gf3 in it), and i just retired it a few weeks ago. i attribute its longevity to the amazing capabilities of the graphics card. i frequently ran games under their required processor spec simply because my video card was a little above what they wanted.

to quote tom's hardware (ugh) on the geforce3's vertex shader:

I would rather have called it 'Vertex Processor'. It enables developers of 3D applications to apply special programs to each vertex of an object or a complete scene (frame) that are executed within GeForce3, thus not requiring any CPU-resources.

doom 3 makes extensive use of shaders, and that's where a good video card really shines.

Sounds kind of like motion sickness.

Actually thats the one thign they wanted to avoid with doom 3. The spent alot of time making the game playable by old/dated machines, and still make the game look superb on new machines. All game reviews i read said you can play the game with the bare minimum requirements, and it'll still look and play great.

Right now im playing on the lowest detail (with all thextras turned on though) and 640X480 resolution, and it still looks fantastic. I have a 2 ghz pentium 4, with 768 mb ram, and a 64mb geforce mx (it sucks)

I heard if you have a top of the line machine and play on max resolution with it set on ultra high, the game looks absolutely stunning.

and anyways, for all the people who say doom isnt as interactive as halo, and linear/dumbed down etc:

Thats what doom is, and was meant to be. It wasnt meant to be a total open puzzle game like deus ex, and it wasnt meant to be a wide open team strategy game like halo. It was meant to be a single player FPS shooter where the gates of hell open on mars, and you go around blowing things away in the creepiest environment possible.

All in all, i think its a fun game. The scripted elements, and monsters popping out of nowhere adds alot to the game. Its very creepy to walk around the dimly lit, and breathtakingly welldone levels in doom 3, and have monsters spawn behind you or have the walls suddenly turn red with blood, or have a childs voice screaming.

and the game engine will be around for a while. For a game engine to handle as much detail as doom, and keep the fps down as low as it does is very good. Im kind of looking forward to trying to make maps for it.

Yes, it's creepy as hell at times and those monsters are fucking awesome, but it could've been so much better. No vehicles, no co-op modes, no legitimate story (what story there is is rather thin and Metroid Prime-esque); just another generic shooter.

id needs to wake up and realize that it's not 1995 anymore.

Here's to Halo 2 and Half-Life 2.
I enjoy the more effort put into it's visuals and single player, i think i'd enjoy it less with vehicles in particular, and yeah co-op too, i'm fine with the basic multiplayer feel to it, i think Doom should stick to what it's good at. Leave the vehicles and co-op modes to your halo's, ugh now that i think about it don't even compare Halo to doom it's not even on the same level.

I, like you, am also gonna miss the Q3 engine, i'm so used to all the commands in it now and it's lovely console, i never fucked around with Doom3's when i played it, did any of the commands possibly carry over?

edit: Loving Q3 + mods as much as i do i have to throw this in

Well i applaud you for that, it's not so much the playing of CS...although that gets to me, is the people online that you have to suffer through it with, they boggle my mind with their ample supply of idiocy at times.
