Thumbs down You ever have one of those days...?

... where your three week old 160 gig hard drive decides to die, deleting 30 or 40 gigs of videos with it?

Yeah, I didn't think so. So quit complaining.

No, but I had one of those days where I spent two hours in the car trying to find a place that was actually 50 minutes away, searching for a nonexistent road in an area that made the dueling banjos from "Deliverance" stir in my head.

I'm sorry about your hard drive.

actually dont. if it's three weeks old i'd wave my warranty in the manufacturer's face, drop it like it's hot, and get your money back.

from some site i don't necessarily trust:

What the freezer trick does is cool down all the components of the hard drive. It will cool down the overheating chips on the hard drive’s circuit board (which is a known problem with some models of Maxtor Quantum drives), and as well as allow the platters contract a bit, making it easier for the heads to read the data, thus decreasing read errors. All this “trick” does is buy some time in order to recover your data. In other words, the drive will need to be replaced. If it is still under warranty, RMA it back to the manufacturer.

Thanks for the sympathy. I'm not sure which of us had it worse.

yeah, i think it wiped itself pretty clean. it told me the drive was empty and i needed to format it when i ran a diagnostic test.

It's a WD. I've had many problems with my Quantum, too. Damnit. I hate hard drives.

yeah, i'll be scrambling to get some DVD-Rs soon so i can backup my hd's. i've only had one failure in my past, but that was enough to make me very interested in protecting my data.

Well I left out the part where I was trying to find this place to interview tomorrow as a babysitter, and I had to call her and tell her I wasn't going to be able to fill the position because my car and my driving experience weren't up for it. But my best friend came into town and asked me to be her maid of honor, so my day did get balanced out. Maybe your good thing is just around the corner.

i need to buy a DVD burner for just this reason. :\

everyone else, feel free to commiserate with your endings to "ever have one of those days when...?" it was getting interesting comparing stories.
