Unhappy comic catastrophe

I just had one of the scariest moments of my life. I went out for about an hour and came home and wandered into my comic room, and what do I see, the biggest jumble of boxes on top of each other. for a second I just stared at it, then I screamed, then I
screamed some more and jumped up and down.

the whole bench that I kept about 70% of my collection on had
collapsed. almost everything had stayed in its box, but there were
still hundreds of comics EVERYWHERE. luckily, since I bag and board everything most of the books just slid into crevices and remained unharmed. some of the boxes had taken a battering, with one huge wooden support falling on top of a long box I had underneath the bench. the box didn't have a lid and the support hit hard, but amazingly not one book in the entire box was harmed, just the tops of some of the backing boards.

much like a firefighter on 9/11 must have felt, I went in to survey
damage and find any casualties. out of my whole collection of god
knows how many thousand issues there were THREE that lost their lives.

Catwoman 33 - took a hard blow to the top corner but fought on under
the rubble

The Punisher #1 - was hit head on in the centre, leaving an unsighly
mark and crease. it was a battle wound to be proud off.

Phantom #1378 - the worse of the lot. was totally folded in half and
lost alot of blood. will be holding a memorial service for it
tomorrow.

I've sat around for the last few hours thinking about life and
talking to my collection, letting them know that we are a strong
nation and will get through this. the ones I feel most for are the
Hardcovers, who had to sit across the other side of the room and
watch the their family fall into devastation without being able to do
anything. I have given the hardcovers counselling and showed them
many of their relatives who are in their usual near-mint state of
health.

August 5th 2004 - NEVER FORGET

i know it may be tempting to lash out in times such as these, but hopefully you've learned from current affairs and won't declare a war on gravity.

The last time he did that, he ended up in a pile with his an S-emblazoned cape unfurled messily over him. Needless to say, he lost.

This happend to me twice in the past 3 months not with comic books though. The first time I 'm working on a web site and scanning in a ton of rare 7" viynl. So ihad a bunch of stuff sitting on my desk. I come into my room and about 1000$ worth of 7" records had fallen off my desk and was blocking the door so I had to risk ruing them to open the door and pick them up.

The other was I was moving this big case that I keep all my cd's in and the damn thing broke and nialed me in the head as I"m standing there in pain about 50 cd's start pouring out all over me.

lol

I did a rough calculation and I worked out that there was about 700kg of comics on the table that collapsed. I don't know how much that is in pounds but yeah, its alot, probably serves me right for keeping so many there

by the way that should say 500 not 50, I had someone rushing me out of the room before as I typed that.

erm, since a ton is exactly 1000 kg 700 kg would be exactly 70%...

i'm using Long Ton. which makes sense seeing that you're from europe and i'm from usa.

TON
A unit of weight equal to 2,000 pounds (0.907 metric ton or 907.18 kilograms). Also called net ton, short ton.
A unit of weight equal to 2,240 pounds (1.016 metric tons or 1,016.05 kilograms). Also called long ton.

I keep my comics in just cardboard boxes stacked up ontop of each other. No chance of it falling over and killing many helpless victims. didn't you notice the shelf was bending anyway?

Get a life homo. Comix loss is not a tragedy.

But the date is amazing. By far my favorite.

Isn't it ton vs tonne?

Anyway, that's like the weight of a small car

Just out of curiosity... why did you have boxes of comics stacked on a bench? I mean, stacking them on each other is risky enough. You need big, sturdy bookcases, a box on a shelf, so they don't rest on each other and so the shelves one break.
