The minimum and recommended system requirements on that thing are mind-boggling.

Anyway, I thought it shipped today and won't be in stores until Thursday.

it could act as a very effective diuretic.

to me the game is nothing short of terrifying. i'm running a pretty ridiculous system, so the graphics are convincing to say the least. the sound is incredible (far more important to the game's quality than the graphics), and the staged events/cutscenes are great (read: blindsiding and SCAAAAAAARY). you find yourself surveying every new room trying to figure out where the imp is going to bust out of a vent or a hidden door.

i had read early reviews from those fortunate enough to have snagged it from various stores over the last few days. a common thing mentioned is the overwhelming darkness. it's really too much - having to toggle between the flashlight and a gun IS a bit of a hassle, but it really does set the mood. you can move the gamma up a little bit to make it reasonable without taking away from the intended effect.

also, almost everyone mentioned having to take breaks. i thought this was a ridiculous notion until i started playing it. the longest i could play was maybe 45 minutes or so. it wasn't that i got tired of the game or anything - my nervous system just needed a serious timeout. most of my sessions are like 20 minutes and they leave me feeling very much on edge for a little while.

some best buys made a boo-boo and sold copies as early as friday. some eb and gamestop stores started authorized selling at 7pm monday and the rest of their locations started today (that's where i got my copy). some best buys sold today (my brother got a copy this morning), but i think the majority are starting sales on thursday.

and to those who'd rather not pay the 55 bucks, circuit city is offering the game at 45 starting friday.

something like Pentium 2 (2gMHz), 386MB of RAM, ATI 8500, 2 gigs of hard drive space.. umm. i think those are the major ones.

And this is MINIMUM, no bells and whistles, requirements.

That's not specific, because I'm too lazy to look it up too. But I did look it up two or three days ago.

People talked about Far Cry and how much of a mad pc you needed to run it ok. i rat it pretty ok on the medium settings on a p4 2ghz 256 mb ram, nvidia mx400 64 mb. seriously.

i'm installing it on my work machine now, which is barely above minimum req. i'll let you know how it runs. i've seen it running on a 1.4 with geforce 3, with antialiasing turned off, running at 800x600 and it still looked fantastic. had some problems running clunky, but still playable.

Is it as similar to System Shock 2 as it sounds? Not that that's a bad thing of course

stupid question: so will this run okay if you only have 256 MB RAM? I can not wait to play this game.

Thumbs up

I once ran Windows XP with 48mb of ram, so maybe.

But it didn't work that well.

This reminds me of my friend John. He wanted the Family Guy DVD's so much, he prank-called Best Buy on the day before they were released claiming he was the regional manager. He told them to put them up on sale because other stores were already selling them.

So he bought the DVD's a day earlier than scheduled...

I read somewhere that someone e-mailed some guy from the System Shock 2 team quite a while back and was badgering him about System Shock 3, and allegedly the reply contained references to, in no particular order, Id Software, licensing, and looking for a new job. Ha.

yes. and it's a very, very good thing. it's not as intelligent as system shock is, but the environment pulls you in a lot more (and no i don't just mean graphics). given how immersive SS2 was, that's quite an accomplishment.

reminds me of all the silent hill games i've played. they're like resident evil except they rely much more on environment and suspense rather then jump out scary type stuff.

The big thing that tipped me off was the fact you learned about the story through emails you found - but if they've made the world seem even more unpredictable and unnerving then I'm sold. Not that I'll be able to play it for a while, but you know.

I could always play SS2 again I guess. I still haven't completed that yet
