On saving trees:

Most paper is made from trees grown specifically for the production of paper -- like we grow potatoes for french-fries. No one is complaining about endangered potatoes.

Recycling does not save trees. We have three times more trees then we did in 1920.

Q: What is the historical reason for the linguistic similarity between the words "mother" and "the sea" in many European languages?

I honestly have no idea. I could wager a guess that it has something to do with a religious notion of the sea either being a mother goddess or being made by her.

Since most european languages come from Latin, let's look at the words for mother: mater, and sea: mare.

Those are pretty similar. Just a guess.
