Talking floridian in need of winter clothes advice

okay well if all goes as planned, im headed off to holland and spain by the end of the year.

now..i have a huge floridian dilema.

winter clothes.

i went to canada and new york 2 years ago, and i bought one of those big poofy impermeable winter jackets and took along several sweaters to layer underneath. it worked fine. the only problem is the bulk of that jacket. i was ok during the trip cos we had a car and i could just leave the jacket there if it was heavy when i didn't need it.

i'm going to be taking only a carry-on suitcase for all my stuff (plus a backpack). i don't think i wanna take this jacket along with me...it's too big. so i was thinking of maybe investing in a leather one? and then layering sweaters underneath as well? or perhaps a wool coat. will these work the same? i know the leather will repel water and stuff, the wool wont.

ugh i don't know what to do. we won't be renting a car in europe and will only take trains/planes/metros to get to places.

:/

how about a wool coat like this?

All I wear during the winter is wool coats like that...I have several in various colors and lengths. For extra warmth, however, I recommend going with the wool coats that come with the extra lining (ex. on J.Crew you can order the wool coats with or without the special lining).

Leather coats are not near as warm as wool coats. I only wear my leather coats in the fall and spring.

I hate leather, so I always wear coats similar to those and I'm fine. And I live in Chicago. Just make sure you have some comfortable gloves (even those stretch gloves work great), a scarf and all that stuff...and if it's extra cold, just wear a sweater under it...but those things are so warm, especially the long ones. You should be fine with that.

I'm envious of people who don't need to bring out their winter clothes every year

everything behaves better..skin, hair, no sweat. oh i love cold weather.

ok so wool coat it is. 100% wool? or like a blend? oh man i don't know shit about fabric. also..should i get leather gloves then? you mentioned stretch gloves...what material are those.

i have a nice scarf..but i need to get a hat..i guess a beanie or smoething :/

Any kind of wool blend would be good too. I love wool and cashmere blends.

Personally, I prefer leather gloves. A couple years ago, The Gap had some great stretchy wool blend gloves and those are good for winter too.

As for hats, J.Crew had some really cute ones last season. I believe they called them city hats. I've never been a fan of beanies (especially with nice wool coats). The city hat or whatever looked kinda like this...

I also have a hat like this one that I wear with my wool coats...
