If you ever decide to read any Shakespeare I highly recommend books like Othello, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, etc. Those are all plays awesome enough for me to have read them more than once. |

I bought this line of Shakespeare books called "No Fear Shakespeare." They're the type of books that "dumb down" the text for you, except they don't really do any dumbing down, which I like. On the left hand page is the original text as Shakespeare wrote it, and on the right hand page is the direct translation into modern day English.
I like it because it enables you to still be able to enjoy the poetry that Shakespeare wrote while actually being able to understand what's going on in with the dialogue. They also have nice little notes about common slang and stuff that comes in really handy for getting the obscene jokes he cracks. Give it a shot sometime; even my mom who once swore she'd never read Shakespeare found herself borrowing my collection of books. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon14.gif |

It's really a magnificent book, Franzen has a wonderful discriptive writer and the characters he creates are so real. And it's funny, too. There's a part where Enid, the mother, unknowingly takes ecstasy on a cruise. It won a ton of book awards. |

I would recommend any book I liked, regardless. I hate this sort of pretentious bullshit. Jack Kerouac has written a lot of good books; On The Road is the first one I read and is a good introduction to his work. ![]() |

Also, I just finished reading The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, and it's a really good book. Much respect for the Ayn Rand. Boobies. For my book suggestion, I suggest: The Conquest of Happiness, by Bertrand Russel.

I have two Palahiniuk books, but they are pop lit. I try to break him down a lot because I think a lot of people act like he's someone to be idolized, a writer for a new movement. He's really not. DeLillo, though, really is another level. He is the definitive post-modern novelist. |
