Cool Solve this algebra problem for me, pleeeeease

Taken from a test of mine that I have to correct and hand in again.

5) Find the equation of a line through these points. (3,-4) and (-1,8) Show steps please.

Okay, I know that you have to use y=mx+b, but I don't know how. can someone explain this to me, pleeeeeeeeeease?

slope=m= (x1-x2)/(y2-y1)

then you take the eqn y=mx +b, substitute the slope, and a set of points, that gives you the y-intercept. then you'd get:

y=(slope you found)x + (y-intercept you found)

ahhhhh the y-intercept! that's what I've been missing this whole time!

thanks!

Yeah but it probably won't change the grade he got, just show the teacher that he's learned how to do it....though getting the answer this way sort of defeats the purpose :\

So the only person he's cheating is himself, not learning the material properly.

no dude, the slope of a line is the change in y over the change in x.

(y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

right?

actually, I wasn't given the answer, just how to find it. I already got my test grade (a 77 ), I'm just trying to earn a few bonus points by correcting my mistakes.

plus, our teacher said we could use outside sources to find the answer, including the internet. maybe he isn't up to date with the wonder of the "message board" or "chat room".

I already knew the slope part anyways. It was the only part of the problem that I got right.

i would find the slope, then use the point-slope forumla. y-y1 = m(x-x1). i think. but i'm failing calculus right now so don't listen to me.

I am also a sophomore, but age-wise, Nate's slightly older than me. And I'm in Algebra 2 Honors. But I'm only #7 in the class. :\

Ah, the youth of Netphoria...

I'm probably the only freshman here...

Anyway...how I miss Algebra. Geometry is so boring. I can't handle it. It's my last class every day...and it just makes me want to kill myself. All these shapes....and drawing on motherfucking tracing paper. Good god. Geometry is the devil. At least it's easy as hell, though.

slope formula: m = (y1-y2) / (x1-x2)
m = 12 / 4 = 3

point slope formula: y - y1 = m(x - x1)
y + 4 = 3(x - 3)
y = 3(x - 3) - 4
y = 3x - 9 - 4
y = 3x - 13

The correct slope is -3 and the correct equation is y = -3x + 5.
