Talking Ha ha Dadaism

What is Dadaism

from http://www.bergen.org/AAST/Projects/Dadaism/first.html

Formal Definition: A western European artistic and literary movement (1916-23) that sought the discovery of authentic reality through the abolition of traditional culture and aesthetic forms.

Dada was an art movement that was ostrasized from the world of art as it swept through the world like war sweeping thoughout nations. Dadaism brought about everything new: new ideas, new materials, new directions, and new people. Dada had no uniform characteristics as many other movements in the arts have. Dadaist art can be interpreted by each person how they want to see or read it. Dadaism brings out feelings and emotions in each person dependent upon what he or she is going through at the time.

Dada Poems

XIII
DADA is a virgin microbe
DADA is against the high cost of living
DADA
limited complany for the exploitation of ideas
DADA has 391 different attitudes and colours according to the sex of the
president
It changes - affirms - says the opposite at the same time - no importance -
shouts - goes fishing.
Dada is the chameleon of rapid and self-interested change.
Dada is against the future. Dada is dead. Dada is absurd. Long live Dada.
Dada is not a literary school, howl

Tristan Tzara

Who still considers himself very likeable

Tristan Tzara

this is the song of a dadaist
who had dada in his heart
he tore his motor apart
he had dada in his heart

the elevator lugged a king
he was a lumpy frail machine
he cut his right arm to the bone
sent it to the pope in rome

that's why later
the elevator
had no more dada in its heart

eat your chocolate
wash your brain
dada
dada
gulp some rain

.

this is the song of a bicyclist
who loved dada fromthe start
she therefore was a dadaist
like all with dada in their heart

but her husband on new year's day
learned everything & in a crisis
sent to the vatican right away
their two bodies in three suitcases

nor the bicyclist
nor the man
was every happy or sad again

drink some bird's milk
wash your sweets
dada
dada
eat your meat

but teh poetry! It is sobrilliant! It expresses emotions no structured form could ever express! Haven't you ever felt like howling so much that writing it 10x just wouldn't sufficew?!

CONES

Aldo Palazzeschi
from The Arsonist, 1910

The highest windows underneath the
roofs,

shaped like cones.

Also, the church doors,

shaped like cones.

Your hands,

children, joined in prayer,

shaped like cones.

Cedars,

cypresses,

fir-trees in the garden,

cones.

The wings of sparrows

poised in flight,

shaped like cones.

Cones of the roofs, cones of the hands,

cones of the doors, cones of the trees,

cones of the wings,

cones, cones.

i've read quite a few poems that are sort of like that that i've enjoyed quite a bit. well not *like* that. i don't know if you'd call them dadaist but they have the same sort of idea. except maybe they are more structured. teh most famous one is the 'i am the..' what's it called? that poem? ugh. i like it a lot.

I can't believe how some dada art takes absolutely no talent, and it's sold for millions of dollars (like splattering paint on a huge canvas). Not only that, it's a waste of art materials that real artists could be using. We covered this in my Humanities class. God, I miss that class. I believe Dada is still incorperated on much of our art today.

splattering paint.....pollack? american abstract expressionism? which is NOT dada by any means? at all? ever? i'm sorry, but i really don't think you know what you're talking about. and ok, i don't love pollack, but he did more for the avant garde than anyone before or since.
