Lightbulb NHL Multi-Topic Thread!

1. Mario Lemieux

Forty-five points in twenty-one games. After all the injury problems last year I am astonished that he's managed to come back to 100% and show a kind of dominance we just don't see too often in this era. Of course, living out west I haven't been able to see a single Pens game this season but the numbers tell me I'm missing out on something special. Thumbs up super mario.

2. Faster games

For the most part I'm happy with the reduced lenghth of the games. It's greatest function is in that there is much less advertisements on the television coverage, as well as "WHO LET THE DOGS OUT" in between faceoffs at a live game. There are negatives though. The quick faceoffs can sometimes take away from the tension build-up of a final minute face-off in a close game. As well, the obstruction crackdown is sometimes very distruptive to the flow of the game. I don't like how you have to wait for commercial breaks to refill a drink, take a leak, or bask in the hypertension. The biggest frustration with the new regimen is less body-checking and more diving. Its seems as if every year the Head Office does more and more tinkering that takes away from the purity of the sport.

3. Your team

Riding a franchise record ten game winning streak(13-1, in last 14), the Canucks are seemingly incapaple of being beaten. Despite being outshot, outchanced, and outplayed on some nights there is always the great goaltending, great special teams, and timely goals providing a backbone for this teams success. Brendan Morrision is having an outstanding season, two points behind Naslund for the team lead in scoring (10g, 16a, 26p) killing penalties, playing on the powerplay and centering as many as three lines on any given night. He also leads the team in plus/minus (+9). He and Cloutier are the team co-MVP's at the quarter mark. Whether or not they can remain an elite team without a second line center remains to be seen. Everything is as it should be in Vancouver.

the rangers are on the verge of breaking out. i actually believe that over the second half of the season they are going to be one of the strongest teams in the east. lindros and bure are going to start to roll, and nedved and messier are going to continue to do well. once they get holik and richter back into the lineup it's going to be all rangers.

Rangers? Do well? ha. It might seem like they'll be good...but they won't because they're the Rangers.

My Red Wings seem to be stuck in neutral, but when Yzerman comes back, everyone will realize once again why the Wings are the best in the West.

And yes, Super Mario has been amazing...but he's still gonna get hurt eventually. It's a scientific fact. I still wanna see him get through a season uninjured, though...maybe we'd get to see the Lemieux we all miss.

I laugh at the Rangers. They try so hard to be the Red Wings in that they sign big names, but it simply doesn't work for them like it does for Detroit. What have Bobby Holik, Darius Kasparaitis and Pavel Bure done this season? Jack shit. And I couldn't be happier, because I hate Darius.

Do you live in Pittsburgh? They're having a hell of a year. Just lost Tarnstrom for a month, though. For all of you not privileged enough to follow them as I can, he is leading all D-men in scoring. Yes, Dick Tarnstrom. He also has more points than anyone on the hated Capitals. And Mario, he's just Mario. Hrdina, Morozov, Hedberg, and Kovalev are all having quietly great years too, but noone notices because they play in this shithole. I love the crackdown so far, but I'm probably biased because of the 33% power play we've got going.

Nope...so I don't get to see too much of them, which sucks. I haven't even seen one game this year. Anyone know when their next nationally televised game is?

Why the hell do you think Calgary traded for Drury? Because they wanted to avoid that. The problem is, Drury only plays well in the playoffs.

And ZERO, Cujo is gonna smoke your Flamers.

Calgary acquired Drury for Morris, because who wouldn't? Morris wasn't gonna help create any offense, and he didn't entirely meet up to expectations. Drury is a powerforward and i believe Colorado are kicking themselves for giving up a potentially crucial forward. (they're not doing fantastic this year)

Cujo.. heh. He's a classic goaltender, he can stop 5 of 8 shots. >

I smell third straight shutout.

And it helps that Detroit plays a tight defense.

Let's face it. Drury is overrated, and Morris is on the verge of breaking out. Not that I'm happy about that, because the Avs can suck my left testicle.

i had the pleasure of seeing a Penguins game last nite. that is the pleasure of watching the Bruins beat them. Lemieux is a pussy, he cant handle being breathed on, let alone checked. Kovalev took a dive into the boards last nite, and the ref actaully bought it for a 5 minute major. it was certainly a penalty mind you, a cross check, but not 5 minutes. Best line in the league right now: Thornton, Murray, and Samsonov (Knuble while Samsonov was injured). and i will also send a fuck you out to Bertuzzi, i cant stand him

Whats with all this Bertuzzi bashing? On personality alone he's one of the coolest players in the league. And despite being moody he's still geniunely a nice guy. Down the stretch last year he was a holy terror, single-handedly beating opponents on a nightly basis. He hasn't been near that level this year but he's still been good and consistent. He's also very creative and hence entertaining. Todd is the man.

You can tell you don't see too many Pens games, or you would see him routinely shrug off checkers and withstand charges that leave the defenders taking the worst of the hit.

perhaps, but he has routinely bitched about the physical aspect of the game over the span of his career. the new obstruction rules were tailor made for him. i know he has some part of the ownership in the Penguins, but does he sit in on owners meetings and stuff? did he, or does he, have any say on decisions regarding the new rules more than the other players?

Actually, he's the full-blown majority owner, but I think he's had the VP go to owner's meetings for him since he came back. I wouldn't be surpised if he had a little influence on it, though. I know he's bitched about it, I just didn't agree he was a pussy. I liked his early career when he got into fights.
