The Discographers: Smashing Pumpkins special
I haven't listened to this podcast, but Season 2 focuses on The Smashing Pumpkins.
Each episode discusses an album review, with 6 so far starting at Gish and so far up to Machina. Each is at least 2 hours long, so that's 12 hours or more of listening pleasure. Maybe. Some of you may find it interesting. https://thediscographers.simplecast.com/episodes |

My immediate issue within the first 5 minutes is that the only album they've listened to fully is Zeitgeist. This will be void of personal connection, for better or worse

This is cool but also shows how glaringly wrong classical music theorists often get it wrong.
To forgive for example, obviously in e minor and not b minor as he says. |

the talk of the tritone in bury me isn't really relevant, since it's used as a chromatic semitone movement / variation and not in relation to the tonic. same with tristessa. and then they don't mention it when it's actually used as a tritone in the ending chords of window paine! after listening to the sd analysis, I think this guy just is pretty sloppy with his music theory. they claim cherub rock chorus is in g major, when it's in d major. they also claim it only uses power chords without any thirds and is ambiguous about being major or minor. but they are all actually major chords with thirds being played. today isn't tuned down to e flat, the guitars are in standard but it's just played in e flat. what they call the chorus in hummer isn't really a chorus. and they aren't aware that octave pedals exist, and think the exact same solo was recorded twice in different octaves lol so much focus on individual notes, chords, and melodies without understanding the context and how different sections relate to each other. for example often missing what effect volume dynamics has within a song. not entirely sure which part you’re referring to, but in the case of SD, it likely was indeed the same bit recorded twice in different octaves

the main guitar solo in hummer. pretty sure it's a single take doubled into different octaves, and not multiple takes in different octaves played together.

Also galpogos, middle section Bb chord hints at a minor iv chord, typical Beatles move that is all over rock and pop music, but he interprets it as this over complicated Db mixolydian b6 mode.
This stuff annoys me lol. |

This makes up for all the times I've never heard the word "mixolydian"

It’s interesting, but a chunk of it is wrong, and is approached from a musician trained in Classical theory, which causes him to miss the mark on some pretty straightforward things.

Lol then he says “some might disagree, but it’s my podcast.” Don’t broadcast it if you’re not confident with your analysis.

I've listened to the Gish and Siamese Dream episodes, and my favorite part so far is their reactions to the liner notes. They honestly contain a lot of laughable stuff, particularly to a non-fan who is wholly unaffected by the lore of the band.
The piece by piece musical dissections are a little too lengthy while the reviewing is a little underdeveloped, but I'm enjoying this and will definitely listen to the rest. |

Started listening to the Machina episode which so far has been pretty interesting. Enjoying their fairly non-fanboy take on things, especially teasing out elements in the songs I'd previously ignored.
