Hrmm I don't know much about Opera but I did sample what I think was "Ave Maria". I put all the music behind it though....maybe this will help curb part of your Opera need. I've heard Carmen because it is so popular and a lot of the vocals are really lovely.
Here is the piece I created with the sampled voice: hxxp://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=69859CC257BBE162 |

Psh so you ain't gonna comment on my awesome version?
![]() Aha nevermind, I see you have. Heh. I saw an opera with Liz called Partenope and it was more of a comedy, it was really entertaining. Stacy and I went to The Phantom of the Opera recently and while not exactly an "opera" it was really fun to see live. It was also interesting to see the differences between a real opera and the phantom type opera. I am very picky about what I enjoy musically though. |

by the way, I'm just shittin' you, man. I just can't stand the stuff myself.. some of those people can REALLY fuckin' belt it out, though. I'd love to have a pair of pipes like that, but I suppose you wouldn't be able to smoke weed.

Here are a couple of my favourites that happen to be on my computer:
Dvorak: Rusalka - this is the highlight of the opera, the Song to the Moon, arguably the most gorgeous aria ever written. I really hope that worked, I've never used yousendit before Bartok: Bluebeard's Castle - I'll upload Door 4 and Door 5, try to listen to them back to back without stopping, and make sure it's loud - this is about as heavy as Classical music gets. It's not really for solo soprano (the whole opera is those two people) but it's cool anyway. and of course "Un bel di" from Madama Butterfly by Puccini, which isn't even my favourite of his operas, and this isn't even my favourite part of it, AND this isn't even the best performance of it, but it's a famous aria and you'll recognize it and for some reason I have it on my computer. That's all the opera I actually have on my computer, I could rip and upload some more though if you like my picks. That is, of course, assuming this whole yousendit thing works. ![]() |

I have a question that I'm too lazy to look up the answer to, so I apologize for my ignorance in advance... but is it just the singing style which makes opera what it is, and if so, couldn't you mix a different style of music with the singing and have it be considered a separate type of opera?

Its really a bit more complicated than that, but yeah, you could pretty much write an opera using any sort of genre. |

The term opera is fairly loose but different people will claim it means different things. The actual definition is very vague but I think that musicians generally think of opera as being in a classical-like style. But really it doesn't have to be, even the Wall could be considered an opera.

Ahhh see I don't really listen to much Zappa. I listened to the album that has What is the ugliest part of your body on it and that is about it. I also have a live concert he played with Steve Vai and I've watched a live dvd of his several times. While I enjoy his music it just isn't something I could listen to whole albums of. I do love some of his guitar work though and I'm downloading Guitar right now actually. Are there any albums that are specifically geared towards the progressive guitar driven stuff? I really like his diversity in music but the lounge act sound gets on my nerves after a little while.

guitar is a good one, but that's just a collection of his solos. it's fun to listen to them and figure out which song they belong to.. but I suppose since you aren't really that big a fan, it wouldn't be as fun for you.
you would probably really enjoy Zoot Allures. |

Wagner's Ring Cycle is pretty strong throughout, a libretto really helps

a libretto really helps in every opera. although so far i've always been disappointed when it comes to the poetry of any classical lyrics

Seriously, most Mozart operas are so much better than anything else, both quality and entertainment wise. Die Zauberflote (the magic flute) is magnificent beyond belief.

Der Vogelfaenger bin ich ja,
Stets lustig, heisa, hopsassa!

The reason i like it so much is that it combines pure entertainment (the papageno bit you posted), with a for the audience exciting and easy to follow storyline, together with some great arias, and some serious depth as well (freemasonry is a major theme). |
