An interesting theory I read on Reddit
So as we all know Billy gained a bunch of weight around the Teargarden era and that was when he started wearing the spray-tan and was all jovial in the public eye again. And from then on his songwriting took the most drastic hit in quality.
Someone pointed out that the weight gain and his behavior would suggest that perhaps he went on some kind of anti-depressant or SRI and that the shift to overly positive lyrical content is as a result of that. The theory is that this could have been what ruined his edge.
It's an interesting thought that I haven't seen pointed out before. I mean he was totally gaunt and miserable during the Zwan to Zeitgeist era and then all of the sudden there's this total shift in weight and attitude. I think it's a very plausible theory
