The term "rock and roll" probably comes from black vernacular, but as applied to music, it was coined by a white DJ named Alan Freed in the mid 50s who promoted the idea that blues, R&B, and country were all coming together to form something new (closer to what we would call rockabilly music now). He actually had quite a positive vision and helped bring black music to white audiences and often promoted black artists to white people who previously would only have heard white covers of popular black songs... but the effect was that within a few years, rock and roll was the white version of sped up R&B with some country, and music within black culture went off on a parallel but separate trajectory
