that sounds similar to the CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) used in my improv for anxiety class. each week we were to (voluntarily) perform "exposures" outside of class - could be as big or as little as we wanted. we learned to seek out anxiety-inducing actions in order to (at best) quell the anxiety or (at least) not give it so much power.
after that weekly session we would head over to second city for the actual improv part of the course.
