It sounds like you rely heavily on body language to predict a person's personality and interaction style. And for whatever reason, when you can't predict it/see body language, it triggers fear or a protective response. One possibility, just an idea.
I have a similar-but-different problem on the telephone. It's much easier for me to interact in person.
This is 100% of the time or close to it? How about your own picture, do you seem gruff to yourself?
