what the hell.
listening to the lonesome crowded west right now. the drum sound is unrealistic. quite thin and plasticy. that hihat in heart cooks brain is louder than anything else in the drums. there is no bass drum to be heard in convenient parking and a lot of other songs, well maybe somewhere very far in the background.
also, the bass guitar is very undefined and sometimes in the background. no high or mid tones whatsoever. it sounds about the same when i plug it into the microphone entrance of my stereo.
the guitar sounds way up front, like on the biggest part of all modern rock records. doesn't do much to set itself apart from the usual indie rock sound.
the vocals are nice though. quite some dynamic.
lo-fi is fine and all but it's typically the opposite of good production. this is actually the reason i have a hard time enjoying this record. the songs are mostly good. it's not all the way through the album like this (the end of lounge (closing time) for instance sounds nice), but for an important part it is.
