There is actually research which supports the idea that most people respond much more strongly to negative emotional stimuli. e.g., in rating positive and negative emotional reactions on a scale of -10 to 10, 0 being neutral, people who find a $20 bill on the ground might say it made them feel 3, kind of good. But people who discover they have lost 20 bucks from their wallet are more likely to say they feel something like -8, the experience ruined their day
