Well, even before smartphones, it would still be standard practice for lifts to be done in sets with 1-3 minute rests in between them. If you're going for hypertrophy, you'll have sets of more reps with lighter weights and shorter rests. If you're going for strength, you'll do sets of fewer reps with longer rests. Either way, you're probably taking a rest and not just doing one long set of 50 squat reps or something. The only difference now is that you might just pull out your smartphone during those rests that you would be taking anyway.
