just any gun, not the semi- or fully-automatic assault weapons
like the whole idea is that when someone breaks into your house you have a gun handy in order to escort them out of the house in a friendly way or just shoot them in the face and you will have successfully defended your family, but how often does that actually happen?

it does, but you're more likely to get shot by your own gun than shoot someone else. to be fair, most of that is probably suicide
