Good stuff man. Not saying you should keep your head down or anything really, but after living here for my whole life, as a rule I speak in french first when out on the town and I'm ordering or buying shit. It just makes life easier. And if it's shitty enough often you'll find they're bilingual too, take pity, and try to speak in English for your sake out of pity, heh
Had a friend who came from Kentucky to live with her boyfriend up here, she had enough bad experiences with public transit employees who refused to address her in english that it was enough of a factor to help her decide to head back home after a few years when things didn't work out with him. Just didn't feel welcome enough to stay.
