Like in psych departments, they aren't really professors per se. They're researchers who also teach a couple of classes and supervise dissertations and theses. So really they need to either publish scholarly articles/books/etc and/or do research that gets funding from somewhere to keep their jobs. Some of it is surely luck - there's a lot of people and few positions. But they definitely have to do publishable work to keep their jobs

Oh yes. I'm not saying I haven't accomplished things to earn the job. I'm saying that about 1,000 other people have similar accomplishments and only about 10% of them have jobs like mine. The rest are working at Panera. By luck I mean that there is no rhyme or reason to who that lucky 10% are.
