Mass shooting motives are getting weirder. Used to be your standard troubled malcontent misanthropes and right-wing terrorists angry about recent societal changes. Now, we've got a guy who was probably upset he didn't make it to a video game tournament; somebody who was convinced a video-hosting platform was limiting the reach of her fitness contents; and not one, but two bitter incels.
Or maybe the motives were always this weird, but we've just recently began framing them in more specific ways. Most mass shooters, recent and past, seem to share the quality of taking out aggression on strangers because they feel the world owes them something. Who knows, maybe Mack Lépine would have identified as an incel if that was a group identity back then.
