It's not just a smashing Pumpkins phenomena. You can go down the list. Many washed up hair-metal bands still made bank by playing shows in Brazil in the mid 90's- early 00's when they couldn't even fill clubs out west.

'Cause they are STILL big since their heydays, not because they are only big now. It's hard to see a band touring SA outside festivals, so when they have the chance to see their favourite band playing live they do, regardless.
The Pumpkins, for example, played in Brazil in 96, 98 and only came back in 2010, then 2015. God knows when they are coming back there now.
