The biggest problem for left/socialist activism in the United States has always been an inability to understand or navigate party coalitions and Democratic Party intra-party politics. That refusal to engage with the grassroots of the Democratic Party has left Socialists and other Left groups small and powerless.
Decisions in American politics are made within interest groups in coalition. This is how every major successful political movement in the USA has affected change. This is how Fundamentalists and Extreme right groups took over the Republican party. Most power and decision making is made at the Primary stage.
This is why Sanders works within the Democratic Party, and doesn't run for President as an Independent.
