I think impromptu essays are bullshit. What skill is pulling something out of your ass without enough time to plan, consider, and revise your ideas supposed to hone? All essays should be take-home essays, IMO. This seems especially wrong for speech writers. Lots of times unexpected events require a quick response.

I think being able to write coherently without prep time is a pretty valuable skill.
