Yeah sadly I think if you can see mountains every day it diminishes your will to visit them properly. One of the reasons we’re moving back to NZ at the end of the year is to spend more time outdoors, hiking etc. But out of all the people I know who grew up in Wellington, only a tiny handful seem to enjoy hiking.
Or “tramping” as it is known in the homeland.
This is in the Tararuas, where my family went hiking because my communist father believed that skiing was a bourgeois capitalist hobby for stupid people who liked spending money to wait in lines for chairlifts. In the winter there’s often snow at the peaks. So you can play in it, but unless you carry your skis to the top of the mountain yourself, the speed you can gather is somewhat limited by how fast your unprotected body can slide on a slope when you run and dive.
