Wasn't his whole mindset, trying to ape whatever was popular at the time? Like that interview where he said that after Gish, he needed to learn how to write a pop song --> Today, etc
For whatever reason, the band just works perfectly with """"grunge"""" material. I'm not sure why that is......I dunno, BC and JC are both incredibly ambitious people - Corgan trying to be famous [and a great guitarist], Chamberlin trying to be a great drummer - enough songwriting and musical talent to build an incredible band on. Iha and D'arcy have enough of the i don't give a fuck about them to qualify under that sort of "underachiever and proud of it" label for that time so the whole thing didn't come off as overly posh and tryhard.
