Arrow my conversation last night with a 14-year-old kid

I went to a firm function and one of the parters brought his wife and 14-year-old son. His son had his iPod, I got drunk, and I started asking him about "what the kids listen to these days" in a very condescending manner. Quite funny actually.

Anyway, I asked him what was popular and he said 95% of the stuff out right now is just horrible, but that MCR is very popular and people are obsessed with them. I asked him if he had ever heard of The Smashing Pumpkins and he started laughing and said "um, of course I have, they're one of the best bands of all time."

I was shocked. I said "well, do you have any Pumpkins on your iPod?"

he showed me he had zeitgeist and mellon collie.......he said zeitgeist rocked hard and he loves tarantula and that that song's very popular now

he even knows a lot of his friends who are going to see SP this fall

made me

i know the youth of today is generally frowned upon in regards to music and well, pretty much everything else (and for good reason,) but this actually is a rather encouraging little moment. whether you love, hate or are just passionately ambivalent about zeitgeist, and ignoring what corgan himself says as he is generally just a tall liar - the band needs success to continue onwards. and maybe that onwards continuation will be improvements over zeitgeist. but to get this success, they kinda also need to get the younger generation's attention. the old fogey fans can't carry them.

I like how we now consult 14 year old kids to see what's cool I have one 14-year old cousin who is SO imersed in the local music scene here, and one night my non-sober bro ran into her a show, and had to call me to see if it was really her, because she changes her hair color every week... ahh those were the days.

I was 14 and listening to the pumpkins (wonder if that made me cool... probably not!)
But a similar situation, I ask people I know that are still in college for book suggestions. I do this intentionally, because I know that when I was in college I knew about "cooler" books than I do now.

i love when people use the word "joshin'" or even "joshing." that needs to be brought back into the popular lexicon.

i live in toronto and i made the mistake of asking my friends little sister (16) if there was alot of buzz around the pumpkins. She gave me a "come on" look and let me know that buzz was little. she is really really alternative for her age so maybe she is just too cool.

YOUR QUESTION AND COMMENTS ARE RUDE!
And, please define "self important garbage"
No, it's coo l I know what you are talking about to a certain degree.

Little Cousin goes to a lot of shows @ Northern Lights in Clifton Park, http://www.northernlightslive.com/ i know that she goes to shows where the average age of the band members is 18. . they good some decent national acts from time to time too. My little brother's band, The Nightlife http://www.myspace.com/thenightlife opened for Saves the Day there last year. It was pretty neat.

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me

i first became a big fan when i was 12.

that was a fun time. so much music to discover and fall in love with.

i wish i could go back to right after i purchased mellon collie and just laid down and listened to the whole damn thing...thinking to myself "oh damn i didn't know they could be so angry!" when Fuck You and TOASE came on.

awesome.
