My 3rd and final pumpkins show of the Orange Peel run. This was my 3rd show of the run. I saw 6/29, 7/3, and 7/5. Again no curveballs really or surprises. The set however had no setbreak and ran straight through. Looks like it is time to come back to reality at this point. What a week, The set seemed of course way more energetic and on point. That band was hitting on all cylinders tonight. It had the feeling of almost being recorded or pro shot I guess because it was the final night. I thought the show flowed really well. Thanks to my friend Ryan for hooking me up with a ticket for the show. By far this would be the best of the three that I attended. Gossamer and Silverfuck back to back were just crushing to say the least
The Crowd: I thought personally where I was at the CROWD SUCKED! Yeah they were into it when the played Bullet and Today but that’s about it. What was weird to me was when they played Starla 2 nights ago it was like the whole place just got electrified. Then when they play it last night it was like “what the hell is this” I guess it just depends on how many actual fans get into the shows. I had this Tony Soprano fat moron behind me with a hawaian shirt on chanting Soma the whole show. The chant gained steam Billy heard it in between songs and said “Soma huh, yeah we will play a song that sounds just like that” He then ripped into Tarantula. He kept on and on the rest of the set. I tried to tell him there was no chance in hell of them playing Soma and I think he wanted to kill me after that but it didn’t stop him from chanting it the rest of the show. Not to mention apparently he knew Soma but didn’t recognize hummer. I thought the crowd on 6/29 was the best very observant and respecful. That Soma chant just embarrased me really and it was obvious it pissed Billy off. When starting the acoustic set he also told the fuckers at the bar to shut the fuck up. The Set: sing for all you wonder i dont mind rotten apples brand new song written today mama : I thought the acoustic opening set was cool. The new song was pretty sweet about Asheville. Rotten Apples has kind of turned into a really incredible moment with Lisa on keys. Mama has really grown on me I love the new songs. blue skies bring tears united states bleeding the orchid : This was a nice 3 song punch. Blue Skies was utterly amazing. It sounded so full in that room. This one left the crowd confused. A highlight for me. United States was very tight and nasty unlike the previous 2 performances I had seen. It really cut like never before one of my favs off the new album. Orchid seemed to have a little something extra also. Billy seemed to play withmore emotion and urgency than the other nights. today stand inside your love : Today got everyone going. I didn’t mind hearing it, he let the crowd sing the first verse. SIYL just didn’t move me like it had in the past I don’t know hummer shame These 2 were a total highlight. Hummer was esp killer last night. Billy sang again with a passion I haven’t heard. He smiled at Ginger a lot and the crowd did seem to dig it. Shame was awesome. The lead guitars were sick bullet with butterfly wings Take it or leave it starla starz tarantula tonight tonight : Starla incredible, Starz was cool, Tarantula was just pulverizing, Tonight ehhhhh neverlost doomsday clock heavy metal machine This part of the set just kind of left the crowd motionless. I personally loved it. Neverlost really sounded better last night. Doomsday clock kicked total ass. Ginger moved more thani have ever seen her on this one. She seemed very into Doomsday. Heavy Metal Machine to me is Billy being difficult and I loved it because of the crowd and how bad they were getting on my nerves. HMM sounds nothing like the album version all these weird parts etc….A good end to the set. day tripper (tease) >Zero Cherub Rock This 2 song punch whipped the crowd into hysteria. Zero was cool with Billy actually singing this time the “wanna go for a ride” line. Cherub Rock was pretty cool. Neat hearing those 2 back to back in an encore. Crowd was really singing loud on Cherub Annie-Dog Wasn’t expecting this one. But I enjoyed it better than I thought. A nice mild curveball in the set although it has been played Gossamer >SILVERFUCK! >>the end (doors) What do you even say about Gossamer. I looked around and I think they were really blowing some peoples minds with this song. INCREDIBLE bottom line. Im pretty sure it went over 30 minutes last night. The 52 crows line etc…Billy and Jeff playing some blues licks at the end with their teeth. Billy was on a mission to totally slay us to the ground and I think he accmplished that. After Gossamer finished he kind of walked around on stage and their was an akwardness with the crowd almost like he was waiting on us to chant for more. He chatted and thanks the OP the fans etc…He thanked Ginger Jeff Lisa etc…He was like look “ill make a deal we will play one more song for you ok but you fuckers have to go buy that album on Tuesday” Everyone roared. Very cool moment. I thought it would be something quick like Untitiled No! Silverfuck it was so nasty loud in the beginning you could barely tell what it was. Best version i have ever sen heard. He said was going to kick our ass before it started. It was just pummeling. He and Jimmy were grinning very cool moment. Billy seemed to REALLY get into it like I havent seen before in this tour. After it finished he stayed out a little longer thanked everyone and then headed off. Brilliant show Despite the great set I must say I am dissapointed with the overall result of these shows. We basically got the same sets as Europe with some new Asheville songs thrown in that are really good but that’s it really. Not what the press release stated. I hope they mix the setlist up before the fall. There is no point in me going to the Fox theatre after seeing them 3 times in the OP to see the same selection from 50 songs and that’s it. But these were the shows of a lifetime. Last night was the pinnacle. Fillmore get ready. |

I'm not so sure the press release was misleading, but would grudgingly agree with being slightly disappointed by the residency (keep in mind I didn't go to any of the shows, just read about and listened to them on archive.org).
Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the high of just appreciating that there are Smashing Pumpkins shows again at all, but at the same time, I still am of the opinion that these residencies are our *only* chance to hear certain songs played live ever. Anything pre-Gish, older b-sides, these are all songs that the band would never play at a mainstream show. I was stoked that they broke out Translucent on the first night, because that's a perfect example. I really enjoyed the new acoustic songs also, I have a feeling that they will become the 2007 versions of Towers of Rabble. I can understand why Billy may be reluctant to break out too much crazy stuff, since from the reviews people have posted it seems like the crowd was much more energized by the rockers and the recognizable songs, but when you release a press release saying basically "we're going to be dusting off forgotten songs", isn't that a polite way of saying "if you're not a psycho fan, these aren't the shows for you"? It seems like the crowd still consisted mostly of radio fans who totally dug Bullet and Today, and if the band sees that they'll be less likely to play Spiteface. I'll just keep holding out hope for the Fillmore shows, I guess. Now they are our only shot at ever hearing a pre-Gish song live.
