Lightbulb God and my country - VERY ENLIGHTENING

Below is an entry in Black's Law Dictionary, it may give us some insight into what Billy Corgan had in mind when he wrote "God and Country":

God and my country. The answer made by a prisoner, when arraigned, in answer to the question, "How will you be tried?" In the ancient practice he had the choice (as appears by the question) whether to submit to trial by ordeal (by God), or to be tried by jury, (by the country) and it is probable that the original form of the answer was, "By God or my country," whereby the prisoner averred his innocence by declining neither of the modes of trial.

Wait a second, if saying, "By God or my country," means you're innocent... doesn't saying "God and country" mean that not only are you guilty but you're willing to be tried by BOTH God and country?

The lyrics don't really back this up.

It's the song title and the chorus! What more do you want?

When Britney sings"Hit me baby one more time" it doesn't matter what the rest of the lyrics are, the connotation(s) from that one line don't change.

On a literal level yeah, but when he says For God and Country, I'll fight, for God and Country, I'll die, For God and Country my soul is so alive, I'm pretty sure he isn't talking about being guilty/innocent.

the lyrics sound like they are written as a diary entry by someone in some deep shit, trying to convince themselves of something.

i think the entire album is going to reflect someones goings on during a post apocalyptic siege. doomsday clock being the start of the apocalypse, p&c being the rapture.

i think even tarantula fits this- someone is struggling with wanting to give up whatever fight they are putting up, and is being chastised for wanting to do so.

could be, that'd be cool. In fact I was thinking that too after I heard Tarantula and realized it wasn't a political song like everyone thought the album was gonna be.

But then couldn't For God and Country be about wanting it all back and not having to go through doomsday?

That's an interesting take on it. I think you might be right. I think Billy Corgan is expressing the spirit of the times once again.

forgotten country is what made me think about the album this way. after hearing the production on doomsday clock and listening to the other songs ive heard live versions of, it just further seals the idea.... in my twisted mind at least

Hopefully, like a lot of their songs, we can all find our own personal meanings to the concept/individual meanings of the songs on Zeitgeist. But if this isn't the case, the post apocloypse concept is a good one.

Zeitgeist is about the Information Age and the semiotics of it (this is why the Paris Hilton cover with the cell phone is so perfect...to say nothing of how that relates to the album cover). This gives any thematic resonance here a lot more texture than the tired politics of the Green Day album, which was simply didactic.

Complaints about the multiple versions of Zeitgeist are exactly what these themes would be interested in. It has the potentiality of being great glam irony.

More on this poopy later...

Actually, I thought my post on that supported him rather than pulled him down.
