Why am I always thinking about death?

I am not sucidial or depressed, nobody close to me has died, I am not dying or anything like that. There is no reason why it should be on my mind yet I seem to always be thinking about death and the fact that I won't be alive forever.

Maybe it was those "afterlife" and "what happens after you die" threads here on Netphoria that got this stuff stuck in my mind.

It's really annoying, I never really gave it much thought before because after all it is something that is not under your control and there is no point worrying about something that is a constant and can't be changed.

Yet here I am with this garbage on my mind.... :(

Maybe you should think about sex more. Just for christ's sake don't combine the topics.

Because death is inevitable (until technology advances) and no one knows anything about what happens to a person when he dies, and the unknown is scary. I know I'm really afraid to find out.

There's nothing we can do about it.

I like the way people are actually *paying* to be cryogenically frozen. Assuming their bodies aren't massively damaged by the freezing process, they've volunteered themselves to be guinea pigs in some future resuscitation experiment. I'm sure they'll get it right the first time!

I've been thinking about death because I am wrting a paper baout the death care industry for a class.

I don't think it is so bad to acknowledge that death is out there i mean shit anything can happen at anytime you just don't know.

well, i assume that they're already dead before they get frozen. otherwise it'd be euthanasia, right?
So if they can't be brought back it's still no great loss.
apart from the spoilt rich-kid son who doesn't get the inheritance.

I know this is a stupid thing to be against, but yes, I am against cremation (unless its pets or finacial reasons).

I never thought it was that big of a deal between being buried, or being cremated, you're dead anyways, right?

My Grandma, who I was VERY close with all my life died 3 years ago...She had cancer for years and years, then finally one day it came back really bad, she went into the hospital on a Friday, I visited her on Saturday and she was gone on Sunday...it happened so fast, there was no funeral, no wake, nothing. She told me that she didn't want a funeral because she didn't want her sister picking her pockets even in death, but I knew it was because they didn't have much money. It was sad that I really never got to say a final goodbye. I cry everytime I think about her (hence why I'm crying now)...

Anyhow, the point is, she's been cremated and her ashes are in an urn in my Grandpa's house...I wish that whenever I thought about her or felt sad about her that I could just drive to the cemetary and sit by her grave and talk to her and give her flowers...I know it would make me feel a lot better, somehow...

I dunno, I just always remember everyone always going to the cemetary to visit their loved ones, and its like the one person who dies in my family who I loved and cared about the most, I can't go lay flowers on her grave.

I just think its very selfish if you leave any loved ones behind when you die, to get cremated (unless its for financial reasons)...

Yeah, but the idea is that they *are* able to restore people to life. But the first subjects are hardly going to be complete successes, with pre-frozen people strolling around enjoying a perfect life in the future. They'd probably start by reviving a removed nervous system or something. Mmm, I'd like to be that guy!

why are you even concerned that you are thinking a lot about death? death is a huge part of life and vice versa; the two of them help define each other. it's not like you're thinking about suicide. although sometimes i find it weird that every so often i wonder what life would be like afterward if i suddenly keeled over and died. that creeps me out.

I actually think the complete opposite of you: it's selfish for loved ones to place any demands on what you want done with your body after you die. Science is getting all my organs (the good ones, anyway), and then I'm getting cremated, and I'd hope that my family would respect my wishes. I mean, there are a lot of things a dying person can be selfish about, in the will and so forth, but I think it's a matter of common decency that the family should have no input whatsoever into what happens to the body. It's all you have, really.

Oh and Andrew: you should read philosophy. A lot of these people deal with death in unique, thoughtful ways that are a lot more palatable (to me anyway) than mainstream thought on death.

my opa was cremated when he died, but his ashes are buried in a cemetary with a nice plaque and flowers around it and everything.. our family goes and sees him pretty often.. there are other options for cremated ashes than just having them sitting in an urn in someones house.

Yeah, that too. Although even in somebody's house, it can be a nice tribute. If I died, I'd want to get cremated and put in somebody's house ... (actually, I'd probably just demand to get spilled onto a carpet and vaccuumed up, because nobody's life is really that important. In the end, it's all a gag.) But still, my point is that you can do a lot with an urn, including bury it and get your own gravesite if you want.

I respect your opinion -my desire to be cremated is a result of a personal experience that has led me to that choice -my father died really unexpectedly when I was 14 and his brothers and sisters made all of the arrangments and did not ask me about anything-hey i was 14 but it would have been nice to have been able to choose some flowers or somehting. Seeing my father lying in the casket so pale and not having seen him in person for 5 weeks was devastating. That is not how I want ot remember him. He is buried with his parents because he did not have a plot of his own and I hardly ever get to the cemetary to visit there.

After september 11th i got a will and specified my wishes a) because you never know what could happen and I don;t want it screwed up.

The book I mentioned in my earlier thread might be of interest-the death care indistry like the majority of other businesses is about the bottom line.

Yes, it's terrible. They try to guilt you into spending thousands on the funeral. I like the cremation thing myself.
