Can someone please explain the difference between a Republican and a Democrat?

About the only thing I've gotten--and this was from Democrats--is that Republicans are more about morals.

It makes no sense! It's like they're deliberately trying to confuse me!

Smiley33 10-01-2002 11:46 PM

there's no use in trying to understand it, you see.

just remember that donkeys = democrats and elephants = republicans. really, that's all you need to know about those things.

MUZZLER 10-01-2002 11:48 PM

Democrat's fuck around in office and let people push us around like little bitches. Republicans get shit done.

sppunk 10-01-2002 11:48 PM

Republican = Wanna be liberals
Democrats = True liberals.

skippy 10-01-2002 11:48 PM

The best explanation I've heard is as follows: A Democrat will take your money and leave you alone to live your life. A Republican will let you keep your money but tell you how you must live your life.

There's a reason they call it the "right." IT'S RIGHT!

Kalsedony 10-01-2002 11:49 PM

Being Democratic seems to be trendy, so I became interested in figuring out what Republicans are, exactly.

You mean "chief" as in former President Clinton, right?

I mean you could not possibly be blaming Bush for a deficit that existed before he was president or an armed forces that issues before he got to the office.

Irrelevant 10-01-2002 11:53 PM

they're not very different. democrats take away your freedom, and republicans take away your freedom, they just do it in different ways.

Yep I guess you're right we should just sit back and watch them slowly destroy our country.

MUZZLER 10-01-2002 11:57 PM

Ok. So when I make a right turn from the left turn lane tomorrow, i'm going to say "BUT OCIFER! There's a reason I turned right! It's...RIGHT!"

Debaser 10-02-2002 02:30 AM

democrat: "we gotta help people! we gotta feed the homeless! we gotta save the trees! we gotta improve the standard of living for everybody!"

republican: "sounds good. but fuck, i ain't paying for that shit."

Undone 10-02-2002 02:31 AM

We could all refer to Mr. Bill Hicks for this one. There's a puppet over here and a puppet over here! They're one and the same!

Samsa 10-02-2002 02:34 AM

democrats: socially more liberal except on certain issues where general society is concerned ie gun ownership. fiscally more authoritarian (tax collection, income distribution). not too big on army or warfare spending.

republicans: socially more authoritarian except where things are concerned that deal with freedom from government rule (ie gun ownership). fiscally more liberal. people should be allowed to keep their wealth. poor people are poor because they deserve it. welfare isn't necessary. aggressive foreign policy. big on defense spending.

i really don't understand how republicans identify what falls under freedom from the government. they seem to want god everywhere, and no abortions, and no drugs, etc., but the government can't stop you from owning a gun!

Salena Child 10-02-2002 01:09 PM

democrats: think that they are supposed to take care of people because people have no idea to care for themselves. basically they want to be your mommy and daddy when your supposed to be grownups and care for yourself. they think they know how you should live your life and you have no idea what you are doing, so they do it for you.so you take no responsibly for your own actions and you never learn anything because the government does it for you.

You seem to have forgotten one.

Ding ding. So try again Suze. It sounded sorta close at first.

Random Female 10-02-2002 01:26 PM

Traditional hard-nosed republicans tend to be anti-women's rights (pro life etc) and supportive of institutionalized religion. they'd tend to advocate prayer in school vs. a democrat. also yay to big punishments for criminals such as the 3 strikes rule, capital punishment etc.

BlueStar 10-02-2002 01:26 PM

I looked in my copy of Oxford's Dictionary of Politics, but they don't have a definition for Democrat or Republican. Probably because "party beliefs" are a changing thing, i.e. a president that was a Republican would probably be a Democrat today. Almost 600 pages with every definition you could imagine, but no definition for Democrat or Republican...though they do offer the history of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

Just know this: Republicans are evil.

Under Clinton, the U.S. had a balanced budget for the first time since 1969...we had a surplus. Bush fucked it all up.
