Has anyone here ever had mono?
 

I have it right now, and it really sucks... what can I do to make it better? any suggestions?

uum, how did i get better?? I took anti-viral medication, lots of pain medication, and even more medication. i remember i was taking 17 pills a day for a couple days

and uuh...i slept. a motherfucking lot....and eventually i could get up. i remember being so tired after taking a shower once that i slept in my towel b/c i couldn't get dressed :(

I did, for like a week. It was very mild for me, just a sore throat and tired. Advice, sleep and wait it out. takes forever for some

I thought I did once but it turns out I am just extremely lazy.

i don't know how severe this is...i mean, i'm taking vicodin, and some steroid pill thingies...and i'm sleeping a lot. but after i sleep for like, 2 hours...i can be awake for 3 hours. i just want to get back to school so badly, and i want to stop feeling crumby. mono is gods little way of saying "you're having too much fun"

mono fucking ruined my life

I had it for over a motherfucking month. I slept, and slept, and slept. And ate lots of fucking oatmeal and drank lots of fucking juice and water. A really small percentile of people with mono get serious strep throat and I WAS A LUCKY WINNER! So I was feverish and my tonsils were humungous and pussy FUCKING YAY


unfortunately, i dont even remember what the hell i did. i just slept and i ended up going to the hospital because i was having trouble pissing just like an old lady. and i was in so much fucking pain from my tonsils that I got an IV of Demerol. Fucking rule.:cool:

WHAT IS MONO

MONONUCLEOSIS

Mononucleosis (often called "mono") is an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Signs of mono ******* fever, sore throat, headaches, white patches on the back of your throat, swollen glands in your neck, feeling tired and not feeling hungry.

How is mono passed?


Mono is not spread as easily as some other viruses, such as the common cold. The mono virus is found in saliva and mucus. It is usually passed from one person to another through kissing, although it may rarely be passed in other ways, such as coughing. Signs of mono usually develop 4 to 7 weeks after you're exposed to the virus. Generally, people only get mono once. It's most common among people 15 to 35 years old.

How is mono diagnosed?


Your doctor will probably first ask you some questions about your symptoms and then may do blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. One common test used to diagnose mono is called the Monospot test. Sometimes other blood tests are needed if the results of the Monospot test aren't clear.

Does mono have any complications?


Sometimes. The main serious concern with mono is that the spleen will enlarge and even rupture (tear open). The spleen is like a large gland. It's located in the upper part of your abdomen on the left side. It has functions that relate to your blood.


Although a ruptured spleen is rare in people with mono, it's wise to be aware of the signs and call your doctor right away if you notice any of them. Signs of a ruptured spleen ******* pain in the left upper part of your abdomen (under the left chest), feeling lightheaded, feeling like your heart is beating fast and hard, bleeding more easily than usual and having trouble breathing.

Can mono be cured?


No. But mono will go away on its own. Symptoms usually last about 4 weeks.

How is mono treated?


The main point of treatment is to relieve your symptoms. The following list *******s tips on treatment.


Rest.
Drink plenty of fluids.
If you have a sore throat, gargle with salt water, or suck on throat lozenges, hard candy or flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
You may want to take acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (some brand names: Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) to relieve pain and fever. Do not give aspirin to children. Aspirin should be avoided because it has been associated with a disease called Reye's syndrome in children. Reye's syndrome is a serious illness that can lead to death.
Do I need an antibiotic?


Antibiotics like penicillin are of no help in mono. Mono is caused by a virus, and antibiotics don't work against viruses. If you have a bacterial infection in addition to having mono, your doctor may give you an antibiotic.

4 weeks my sweet ass. i was exhausted for like 4 months. my immune system has been SHIT since i got it, and it's been over a year now. mono is mean little fuck.

when your immune system is compromised the levels flare up a bit. not enough to make you sick, but just enough to show peopel you care

i had it for all of june and most of july. it was mild, but it wouldn't go away.

my brother had it may and june and his was nasty. he was in bed for like 2 weeks.

fucking christ. that's terrible. i had no idea.

Fuck man. It's a herpes virus eh? Well I got the herpes simplex virus last year around my birthday (ILLNESS ALWAYS STRIKES AROUND FUCKING HOLIDAYS). The kind that gives you cold sores? YEAH EXCEPT IT WASN'T JUST A FUCKING COLD SORE. It was many many sores all over my throat and i lost 10 fucking pounds from not eating for 2 weeks. BECAUSE I KEPT PUKING.

And I went to the hospital to find out what was wrong with me (I didn't know what I had) and they thought i had strep throat from the sores on my tonsils (one tonsil was literally almost the size of a golfball) and they gave me antibiotics which don't work on herpes simplex. so i suffered for three more days before i was so weak that i was blacking out. then i finally got some fucking Codeine and valtrex. I LOST LIKE A MONTH OF MY LIFE MAN, GEEZ

Gee, I never got cooties!
