just read it without your preconceived opinions

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven .

Blessed are those who mourn , for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Samsa, please tell me something. Why are you so fucking gross and sick. Billy Corgan should be ashamed of himself for having you as a fan. That is all.

Definitely one of my favorite passages.

I think I'll go read my Bible now...

sawdust restaurants 11-04-2002 09:35 PM

It's gorgeous. I'm fond of Ecclesiastes 3 and 8, myself. And the Song of Solomon, which even borders on risque for Western audiences. I'm no longer a really religious person, but it's pretty obvious that lots of passages in the King James are quite poetic and beautiful.

Interestingly, there's some evidence that suggests the Sermon on the Mount pre-dates the Bible.

mirrar 11-04-2002 09:38 PM

i've read that way too many times.

What, did I miss the part where it became hip to like/discuss the Bible as a work of literature?

Usually, when somebody posts that it's meant to be derisive. It's not. Ok. It's cool.

what's wrong with the context??

the only context problem i guess is the whole sermon on the mount which actually really pisses me off and i seriously don't fucking agree with it. but if you just look at it in the context of the beatitudes i don't see what's wrong with it.

anywyas ugh. i don't want this to be an analytical post just an emotional catharsis nevermind.

Like, omg. Suze likes the way something was written, it just happens in the Bible. We should prosecute her now.

isn't it being promised by someone who is speaking on behalf of god? that's what i don't like about the context.

Well, sure. I don't even agree with most of the sentiments in there. But from a purely aesthetic, poetic viewpoint, it really is gorgeous.

rp, you're an extremely unhappy person. or at least last time i checked you were. if you just stop assuming god has something to do with it...i don't know. i can't really identify with atheism i guess. but with or without god it's still a wonderful wonderful comforting thing. that's all. i think. i can't comprehend. i don't know. i can comprehend atheism but i can't comprehend atheism so overriding that you can't be moved by that. i guess. because if god is just like...a force or a state of mind...you know. it still works.

*covers mouth and squeals* You responded to someone whose sn is lolololololzing! (sic)hahahahahahah

Samsa 11-04-2002 10:20 PM

well i guess that's what you meant by 'i love that line, taken out of context that is' but how can you take something like that out of context and still love it? there's no way. i guess. or i guess it depends on what your supposed context is.
