http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...732641371.html Helmut Newton dies in car crash Los Angeles January 24, 2004 Legendary international glamour and fashion photographer Helmut Newton was killed in a car crash in Hollywood yesterday. Newton, who fled Nazi Germany and settled in Australia, was 83. He was leaving the Chateau Marmont, a plush hotel that is a favourite haunt of the stars he was known for snapping, today when he lost control of his Cadillac limousine and ploughed into a wall nearby. "Mr Newton was leaving the parking lot of a hotel when, according to the witnesses, the vehicle accelerated rapidly and went across the street and ran into a retaining wall," Los Angeles Police Department Officer Don Cox told AFP. "He was transported to the Cedars Sinai hospital and died shortly after arriving," Cox said. The deadly crash on Hollywood's famed Sunset Boulevard took place about noon today (0700 Saturday AEST), bring to an end a spectacular career that made Newton famous across the globe. He was best known for his fashion and nude photography and for his work in top magazines such as French Vogue. Newton was born in Berlin in 1920, the son of a well-to-do button manufacturer and was enrolled in the American School in the German capital, but was expelled because he daydreamed of photography instead of focusing on his school work. In 1936, he became an apprentice to top Berlin photographer Elsie Simon, with whom he worked for two years before leaving Germany for Singapore on the eve of World War II. He worked for the Singapore Straits Times as a photojournalist for just two weeks before moving to Australia and joining the army. After opening a small photo studio in Melbourne after the war, Newton began contributing fashion photos in 1961 to French Vogue, a magazine he made his own for a quarter of a century. He also worked as a contributor for magazines such as Queen, Nova, Marie-Claire, Elle, and American, Italian and German Vogue. |
