Dean got his ass spanked in Iowa.

sppunk 01-21-2004 06:54 PM

When he wins NH, Kerry gets 2nd, Clark gets 3rd and Edwards and Lieberman fight for fourth, it all is back to the start.

The first Super Tuesday will decide the nomination.

Dean came in a "distant 3rd" in Iowa. If he doesn't have a "strong win" in NH, he is fucked. Kerry and Edwards are going to have a HUGE boost in NH has a result of IA. The majority of the Gephardt supporters are going to come over to Edwards. And a lot of the Clark people are going to abandon him for Kerry. Not to mention, the monetary contributions to the Edwards and Kerry campaigns are rolling in faster than you can blink. Whether or not you want to admit it, the results of IA are going to alter what everyone thought/predicted would happen in NH.

Nimrod's Son 01-21-2004 09:02 PM

Why is it when Edwards polled 4th he was "right in the middle of it" and when Dean finishes third, it's a "distant third"?

Ummm...because polling is one thing and actual results are another. Plus, look at those polls...there was a margin of error of +/- 4%...which means they were all pretty much statistically tied. And then caucus night came and Edwards came in a close 2nd and Dean finished a distant 3rd...FACT. Edwards had 34% and Dean had 18%...Dean was nowhere close to Edwards or Kerry.

Edwards will not get over 15 percent. Clark will pull his momentum away. Kerry, I believe, will now beat Dean, and come in 2nd in S.C. and likely take the nomination, which is OK by me. He has a legit chance of defeating Bush which is somewhat important, but I still believe Dean has the best policies and viewpoints.

And, no matter how much money they get, Dean still has $8 million dollars more, and received $2 million online today. Money-wise, no one will beat Dean.

Still, Super Tuesday will decide, not NH, not S.C.

And, again, Iowa is not at all like New Hampshire. You don't campaign the same, they don't want the same things, etc.

I'll go again: Clinton was a front-runner at one time, then received only 4 percent of the Iowa vote. He came in 2nd in NH, 2nd in S.C. (I believe) and then kicked everyone's ass.

Oh, and also: Hilary Clinton still holds the key to the whole thing.

I never said that IA and NH were the same. And I never said that Edwards would get 1st, or even 2nd, in NH. But, the results of IA DO have a impact on the results of NH. Ex. Hart did well in IA and then his polling numbers in NH went up 44 points. Very rarely do candidates get BOTH IA and NH...the goal is beat expectations in one or the other and gain momentum and generate media attention so as to propel oneself into wins in other states. Fact: no Dem presidential candidate who won the IA caucuses has ever won the White House (Carter came in 2nd behind "undecided"). Edit: Fact: every Dem candidate to win the presidency since Kennedy has been from the South and has won at least five Southern states.

maybe I misread what you were saying was fact but:

McGovern - South Dakota
Mondale - the greatness of Minnesota
Dukakis - Massachusetts

Hey what are the odds of Edwards becoming Kerry's running mate if Kerry wins and Edwards hangs on through the primaries?

And, sppunk, jesus h christ you're talking out the ass.

Uhm, no sir.

I really like Kerry and think he is a great guy. But, I fear that Kerry = '88 all over again. If Kerry can carry every midwestern state and Florida and Bush doesn't gain any other states, Kerry can win without the South, but that would still make for a really fucking close and almost impossible election. Not to mention, the number of Repubs, former non-politically involved, and Independents that Edwards had pulled in illustrates to me that he can go up against Bush and win over the key swing voters.

tweedyburd 01-21-2004 10:34 PM

I'd say Dean's finished. One poll has him behind Kerry 10% (!) in NH, and he'll probably be behind in every poll by the weekend. He should just go ahead and drop out if he doesn't win NH, but I'm affraid his self-righteousness won't allow him to do that. He would win about 8-10 states in a general election if he was lucky.
