Father Shoots Son in Fla. Hunting Mishap Father Shoots Teenage Son to Death by Accident During Weekend Wild Boar Hunt in Florida The Associated Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jan. 20 — A family is struggling to cope with the death of their 14-year-old son, killed by his father in a hunting accident. Dennis Plucknett said he mistook his son Alex's black cap for a wild hog when he aimed and fired his rifle Saturday during a hunt in Baker County in northeast Florida. Monday, the Plucknetts were mourning Alex, an eighth grade Boy Scout who wanted to be a big-league pitcher and had thrown a no-hitter last year. He also had recently earned his scuba diving license, just like his brother and father. "This family is devastated. They are hurting real bad," Ted Hires, a family spokesman, told The Florida Times-Union. "Alex was an exceptional young man (who) had a lot of dreams." Visitation is planned for Tuesday Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach and a funeral is scheduled Wednesday. According to the Baker sheriff's office, Plucknett was hunting with his 17-year-old brother, Jon, and their father, Dennis. Witnesses told deputies Alex Plucknett was in a ditch next to a tree about 225 yards from the camp, when someone yelled, "Hog!" Dennis Plucknett grabbed his .308-caliber Ruger rifle with scope, steadied his shot on the hood of a bus and told police he fired one round at something black he saw moving in the distance. Deborah Bencivenni, another hunter at the camp who had climbed a ladder minutes before to search for game, told deputies as soon as she heard the shot she yelled, "Alex is setting by the tree." "Dennis and Jon immediately ran in the direction where Dennis thought he shot the hog, only to discover Alex lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back of his head," wrote Officer Charles Goldsmith. Alex was wearing a black toboggan cap with a camouflage jacket without a reflective vest, the officer wrote. The teen attended Fletcher Middle School, where he was on the baseball team and pitched a no-hitter last spring. He also was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 623 and attained the Order of the Arrow. Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson said he plans to meet with the state attorney's office Tuesday about the shooting but said there's "no question" it will be ruled accidental. Information from: The Florida Times-Union I thought this was the best part: Witnesses told deputies Alex Plucknett was in a ditch next to a tree about 225 yards from the camp, when someone yelled, "Hog!" Must have wierd hogs in Florida...if they are 4-6 feet tall and wear hats. |

I think I would feel pretty bad if I walked up thinking I just popped a wild hog...and I saw my son lying on the ground with a bullet in his head.
|
holy crap, that's really sad. side note: how do you set by a tree? i.e., "Alex is setting by the tree."

In Scotland they're called 'neds' and they would have said 'weere no bothert oor arse ya mad fannybawz! wee eck wiz a mad bastart an' e went oot in style. no?' translates to 'we don't care. little alexander was a great boy and he would have wanted to go out in style' yes, that last bit is a tad sick. |
