public transportation

My life would not be the same without public transportation. It saves me a lot of money, keeps me from polluting even more, and above all it drags my ass all around town. For all this I am very thankful.

HOWEVER, I can't bear the thought of going outside in the freezing cold and hanging out at the bus stop for 15 minutes. Then I have to get off that bus and wait for another one. Why oh why don't I own a car? :(

sickbadthing 01-20-2004 05:31 PM

I get to read on the bus/train. YAY. It makes me hate my life less.

Mooney 01-20-2004 05:34 PM

i am going to be spending probably over an hour on the bus everyday next year. but at least in halifax you can call and get the ETA of any bus and it's usually pretty accurate.

Mayfuck 01-20-2004 05:34 PM

I use my car for everything.

oui henri 01-20-2004 05:35 PM

yeah, i just go to www.ttc.ca and i get to see all of the schedules and hear that little noise that the doors make when the subway and RT open and shut.

I was 20 cents short of being able to get on the train a week or so ago so I asked the CTA station lady for 20 cents. She looked at me and said, "I'm broke so no". I walked away and she came out and looked at me and asked, "Do you go to church every sunday?"

I was a little taken by this sudden questions so I just answered yes...and she used one of those free fare cards to let me on the train. She looked at me and said, "Put a couple of extra dollars in the tray for Jesus this Sunday."

As I walked away I muttered "You stupid bitch" under my breath. For some reason her question angered me.....I guess it was the fact that she helped me because she thought I was a Christian. I was glad I lied to her.

see in my view it's just totally inconcievable that anyone would refuse giving someone 20 cents in that situation or not let it slide. i mean i'd be greatful and all but if someone had to make sure that i was of a certain religion in order to spare me 20 fucking cents, yeah i'd be pissed off too.

shaniqua 01-20-2004 07:44 PM

i knit on the subway.
i get a monthly pass. it's $98.25. ugh.

peabody 01-20-2004 07:48 PM

i <3 public transportation.

but i don't like having to leave for work an hour early on the chance that i'll miss the purple line and need the hour.

sometimes i need the whole hour, sometimes it is nice to me and i only need 25 minutes.

meh. it's free for me, what do i care?

scouse_dave 01-20-2004 07:48 PM

in response to mirror_untrue...i wouldn't give 20 cents to anyone that just came up to me on the street. we call that 'begging'.

uh oh.

not another one of these threads!

scouse_dave 01-20-2004 07:50 PM

well no...i don't wanna start something off but if someone comes up to you and asks for money, i'd tend to think "i don't know whether this person is a genuine case or a beggar trying to cheat me"

hence, i don't give to anyone.

See, this is what happened to Osama Bin Laden. He was 20 cents short once, and answered "No, I'm Islamic".

The rest is history.

yeah, but how many times a day do you think someone is "just short of a few cents" at the station...

as a one-off you might take pity, but when you see it every day i think you'd need to have a rule of not helping anyone. unless of course you're a crazy religious person.

actually, my new friend in class mentioned that to me!
i'll have to check that out for february. i mean, my parents pay for my metropass anyway, but it'd be nice to spend less.

i'm hardcore atheist but i'd still keep a thing of change around for people who needed it. *shrug*

it's a bit of a pain in the ass at my school anyway, you have to go the week before the new month if you don't want to wait for hours only to find out they're sold out.. i live close enough to ryerson i can walk now, so i don't need one anymore.

It's $31 a month well spent for me. It takes the same amount from my apartment to my university by car as it does by public transportation.

I can't handle the low-floor "wheelchair accessible" buses however... they are more cramped then older buses, don't actually accomodate wheel chairs, and are hell on earth during rush hour. :(

This guy was chain smoking in line for the bus today and kept getting ashes in my eyes. He wouldn't blow his smoke in a different direction so I put out his cigarette.

keebs 01-20-2004 11:56 PM

since i live in dallas, my obsession with public transportation is frustrating.

we have projected rails into carrollton that are due to arrive in 2009 or someshit....pending funding. and wtf is up with cleveland? public transportation closes at like 11pm...even on weekends. god, that annoyed me.

word. i was waiting in line downtown to see Ours and this guy dressed as a bum came up to me and talked to me for like 3 minutes. He said I looked like Jon Bon Jovi and sang I'm a Cowboy really loud. Then he asked me for money and I told him I was broke and he left and talked to the next guy in line.

severin 01-21-2004 05:47 AM

i don't own a car and i don't need one. i pay 480 EUR a year for my pt-pass, and that's way less than i would need for a car. and pt in vienna is extremely good

RopeyLopey 01-21-2004 06:26 AM

I don't mind public transportation. I like reading and sometime I'd have to go through those books anyways, plus sometimes you can meet/see really interesting people in there. It costs me 700 EUR for a one year and the pt here is really good.
I borrow my car from parents if I really need it.

pink_ribbon_scars 01-21-2004 12:17 PM

I took a cab this morning, and it was $30 well spent.

I do love public transportation. It's a big reason why I live in Chicago. My commute is 1 hour and 10-30 minutes each way, to and from work. I do all my reading on the bus/train, and I've read a lot of great books that way in the past six months. I only feel the desire to complain in the winter, because I hate the weather. My bosses offered me a promotion that would cover the cost of buying a car, but I think I'd rather stick with PT and look for a new job closer to home. Having a car in the city is a lot of work, especially with street cleaning and lots of snow to shovel off and expensive gas, parking and city stickers.

I didn't even think you could smoke on buses anymore, and then I remembered you live in Quebec.

If you could read, which I know most of Nova Scotia cannot do, you would see that it said:

and not on the bus. Get it? He was smoking while he was waiting to get on the bus, where it was windy. Wind blows ashes around.

i pretty much have a love/hate relationship when it comes to taking public transit. at times i like doing it, but at other times, it can be such a darned pain in the ass to take(espeically the fact that i have to give an extra time allowance to get ANYWHERE AT ALL, via pubic transit). this time allowance crap is exactly why i hate taking the regular buses that stop everywhere, and have a huge preference towards taking express buses and the L(especially the Red, Purple, and Blue Lines) over a regular bus route anyday of the week(i just wish the darned X49 and X80 buses would run on ALL weekend days(including holidays), and NOT JUST ONLY on stupid weekdays/weekday rush hours).

dammit, i actually am gonna admit that i'm getting to the point where i'm getting sick of relying on transit, and wanting my own car to drive everywhere, even if it is a pain in the ass to find parking in some neighborhoods. i mean hey, it beats the hell outta getting stuck somewhere after the buses stop running and having to beg someone for a ride, and/or walking a few miles to find the next damn closest bus route still operating, that's for fucking sure.
