Why do people spend exorbitant amounts of money on Christmas presents?

It just seems so silly to me. I understand wanting to purchase something nice for someone you love, but I'd much rather have someone show me that they care the other 364 days of the year than buy me something outlandish that I don't really need on Christmas.

I'm not cheap per se, but I'm not about to spend $300 on anybody for Christmas. There just isn't any way because I don't have that kind of money, and even if I did it just seems ridiculous. I spent $75 on my brother's 16th birthday and I think that's the most I've spent on anyone who hasn't been an s/o (and even then I've kept it under $100). I just always go out of my way to get thoughtful presents I think people will like and know I've personalized them and really struggled to find something appropriate, and it means a lot more to me when people do that than when they spend a lot of money.

I'm not trying to condemn anyone; those are just my thoughts.

I know what you are saying. It is just hard to show your appreciation towards someone all the time without it losing its meaning. It kind of has to be boxed into a day for things like Christmas and their birthday and Valentines and what not.

I use to think the holidays were silly, but I just enjoy those days now because everyone is happy and glad to be together. I get to see my family in one room, all with smiles, and I'll put up with anything for that.

The most I ever spent on a present was just over $200 on a digital camera for my dad for father's day. My mom and sister ended up paying me back some for it, so I think it ended up at around $100 or so on my part. The only reason I did it is because my dad never ever asks for things and never says he wants anything, and I overheard him say he wanted one on the phone.

As for the rest of it, I like to take my time and really pick out great presents but I don't ever spend that much.

I agree, fuck raiding the savings account or maxing out a credit card just for this one day of the year. all up I'd spend about 350 aussie dollars at the most, with more than half of that going on bianca's present, since we always try to get each other something nice
