Buddhists in Thailand are holding a nine-day celebration of vegetarianism.

Those taking part in the annual Vegetarian Festival ******* a man who runs several daggers through his cheeks.

Another festival-goer puts a metal spit with pineapples on it through his cheek, during the parade in Phuket province.

The festival is held each October by Buddhists in Thailand's Chinese community.

During the festival some participants perform acts of self-mortification such as body-piercing, although such acts are not part of mainstream Buddhist faith.
