A thread for hockey fans

Before I begin, I'd just like to shout out an extra-special fuck you to each and every Colorado Avalance fan.

But I'll give credit where it's due. If the Detroit "second-highest-payroll-in-hockey" Red Wings don't make the Stanley Cup finals this season for the west, it's gonna be the Colorado "our-fans-cry-all-the-time-because-the-Wings-buy-their-team-yet-Joe-Sakic-and-Peter-Forsberg-are-worth-10-million-apiece" Avs. Their toughest competition this season is gonna be from the Stars (if the Wings don't make it, I'm pulling for Dallas, because I'm a fan of Marty Turco), or the Sharks (if they can sign their goalie, that is). Vancouver could potentially go all the way, but they need Ed Jovo to play more D.

As for the East...Fuck the New York Rangers for signing Darius Kasparitis. I hope they burn in hell (sorry, Mike)...The Philadelphia Flyers could make it, but their retard goalie needs to play in the playoffs. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the Ottawa Senators, but don't count on them beating the Maple Leafs for whatever reason. If Montreal can generate an offense, they could go far...If Kolzig and Jagr return to form, the Capitals could be a surprise team. I don't really see New Jersy going all the way, but half the magazines I read predict them doing just that...Bleah, it's not like the Eastern Conference is gonna win the Cup this season, anyway.

What do you guys think?

leafs all the way. if belfour gets in a groove and starts resembling anything close to what hes capable of the leafs will have a solid defence to go with their great offense. that new guy, forget his name, is very impressive. i can see him getting nothing but better

Bah. The only reason Belfour was any good was because he played for the Stars, who stress defense first. He's a good goalie by his own right, but he's past his prime, and Toronto's defense is a bit soft. They'll get into the playoffs, but the Senators will finally get the best of them.

Oh, and another thing...I hope Chris Pronger takes a REAL long time to come back...he deserves to be hurt after he tried to drill Steve Yzerman last season.

I'm wearing a Leafs jersey right now, by the way. If anything, I'd like to see a Leafs/Wings finals, just so I can see Cujo stop 'em cold.

:D FUCK OFF!! Actually, I don't really think I'm an Av's fan anymore... I mainly was 'cause a friend of mine was, and I wasn't big into hockey until last year. I'm teamless. But I still hate the Red Wings. :p

P.S. Close your damn font tag!!

Well, at least you're not an Avs fan anymore.

Root for the Stars.

Since Pronger is out for most of the year, the Blues' playoff streak will finally come to an end. Thats fine though, because they suck ass in the playoffs, just like the Cardinals.

But it's Dallas... I hate all other sports teams from Dallas. :P It would be convenient though.

Im a leafs fan til the end, but like other people have said already, Belfour needs to play up to his potential otherwise they dont stand a chance cuz their defence is pretty weak. Hopefully Quinn can get off his ass and make a few trades too to beef up the defence a little bit. With Roberts out til January, the leafs have a tough first half of a season. But all that matters is they make the playoffs, cuz its a whole different game then.

Ottawa should be the team to beat for them this year (again), but dont count out Montreal or Pittsburg either. They both look pretty strong. Actually, Montreal is resting alot on Theodore again, so if something should happen to him, they'll have a tough time.

As for the other conference, I could really give two shits. Im sure it will either be Detroit or Colorado in the finals, but I would really like to see Vancouver do it.

Also, what do u guys think of the changes to the rules....theres been ALOT more penalties than normal, and lots of 2 man advantages too. I guess it can make the game a little more exciting at times, but im still against it. Do u think the players are going to adapt, or are the refs gonna lighten up?

Mooney 10-15-2002 11:35 PM

rangers over the wings.

bure will continue to be a scoring machine, lindros will contribute once he stays on the ice, and holik, messier, dvorak, nedved and rucinsky will each add 20 goals apiece. heh.

Nedved is overrated, Lindros is gonna get another concussion, Bure's gonna get hurt, Messier is past his prime, and...GODDAMN it, someone PLEASE KILL Kasparaitis, already.

Brian Leetch is ok, though.

And whoever said the Penguins are gonna be contenders...they're only contenders if Mario Lemieux shows up for a full season, which is unlikely.

Well, the NHL has thought for years that the neutral zone trap was too effective, which kinda led to all these rule changes...i'm against it, though...teams are gonna get scored on way too much because of all the powerplay time...I like close games.

I do like hurry-up faceoffs, though.

The Pantsmaster 10-16-2002 12:55 AM

all we need is a real goalie! and Bill Guerin back!

skippy 10-16-2002 01:09 AM

The Flyers under new coach Ken Hitchcock will surprise a lot of teams this year. LeClair looks like he did back in the Legion of Doom days. Recchi and Roenick also look very strong in the early going. Cechmanek is an enigma in goal. He's a talented player with a pretty serious attitude problem. Much of the Flyers success is riding on how he plays in his second season.

I HATE THE AVALANCHE

severin 10-16-2002 02:58 AM

the only thing i care about this sport is, that it seems like, this year for the first time, an austrian plays in the starting roster (?). so i guess, without knowing anything about the nhl-teams, i'm from now on a fan of the st. louis blues.....

Boner 10-16-2002 03:17 AM

Where were you guys when I was trying to set up a fantasy hockey league? No one responded to my post. I fucking kicked out of the league I've been in and now I'm going through Fantasy Hockey withdrawal.

Anyway, you guys for the most part had some excellent analysis of the forthcoming season, save for my boy SP who let his Stars-fandom get in the way of any meaningful analysis of the season.

All I have to add is that that Belfour will not add that much to Tornonto, certainly won't fill the shoes of CuJo. I've watched him fall from grace the past two seasons and it's killed me (and my beloved Stars). He is still great, and clutch, but without question he has seen his better days.

The Wings will be near impossible to beat. If it happens it won't come from the West but it will be in the form of them overlooking their Stanley Cup finals opponent, probably the Flyers.

But if you guys have read my read predictions before you know that I let bias determine everything so I pick:

Stars over Flyers in 7.

No logic. Just complete homerism. How they will beat the boys from the so-called (and I stress "so called") Hockey Town is beyond me. But they will.

Ya im against it too, for all the reasons you just stated. Plus, I have a feeling that there will be alot of games won b/c of powerplays in the last 2 or 3 min. I just love watching the end of a game with good old 5-on-5 hockey. I think it would be pretty shitty for a game to to be won 2-1 because of a fucking "clutching" penalty with 1 minute to go.
Im not really sure whether or not I like the hurry up faceoffs yet. Im kind of indifferent right now. Im just so used to having those 30-40 seconds to grab a beer or take a quick piss or whatever. Besides, it was still alot shorter between plays than football or baseball.
