what operating system(s) are you running?

i do all my browsing/internet related stuff in mandrake 9.. do my gaming in windows 2000.

mandrake 9 is pretty sweet. i've got a little 3 computer network going here with NFS & samba setup so i can do resource sharing between all of them.

i love that ut2k3 has native linux support. one less reason to reboot my comp :)

SPZero 10-15-2002 02:11 AM

Don't give up on PC's just yet.. give up on microsoft.

Honestly though, Windows 2000 is the best microsoft operating system you can get. Windows XP is just plain shit.

If you're feeling a little adventurous, and nerdy, you could try linux.. as you might know, Mac OS X is based on unix. Let me try to explain a big difference between OSX and linux though.

Every OS has what is called a kernel. it's basically the core of the operating system.. it's like the layer between the hardware and the OS. Anyways, linux has all of its main functions built into the kernel.. so everything works nice & quick.

Mac tried to be all fancy-like, and made a modular based kernel for OSX.. so they have one super tiny little kernel, and then the kernel accesses these modules whenever it needs to perform a certain task (like writing to disk or something).

What they didn't think of, is the time it takes for the kernel to access a module. then for the module to respond. only for the kernel to have to find another module, and so forth.. lots of confusion between modules and the kernel, which slows things down.

That, and the fact that OSX doesnt have native support for older mac software (instead a cheesy layer that allows you to run the software, but without any memory protection or anything so it wont run very stable), really leads to it being a putsy operating system.

I think if you are just going to do surfing, email, & office type applications, you will find that Linux would suit you well.. Mandrake 9 is a nice release that I have running on a few machines here. It's really nice.

I'm running Mac OS X. It is perhaps slightly slow at times but I think the complaints about it have been greatly exaggerated. I have no complaints.

I'm sure it runs just fine for you. My point is just that Linux has a much better design than OSX (even though they're both based on Unix). It's faster, and more reliable.

Edit: Oh yeah, and it run's on non-proprietary inexpensive PC hardware. Uhm.. and it's free.

I'd rather spend $500 (after rebate) for an xp1500 laptop and install Linux on it, than spend $3000 for some lame iBook just cause it looks fancy.

jenniferkate 10-15-2002 08:19 AM

osx.

Nothing/everything 10-15-2002 09:00 AM

These old fuckers where i'm working on now still have w98.

SmashingZeppelins 10-15-2002 09:13 AM

This old fucker still runs Windows 98 also. So there!

obscured01 10-15-2002 09:19 AM

At home I'm running XP Pro...
At work, 2000 Pro.

I'm perfectly happy with both of them. Although I spend so much more time on the 2000pro comp at work... I'm thinking about formatting mine at home and installing 2000 on it. Hmm.

Do you have any valid reasons to back up your faggot opinions? You're just a stupid ho that gets off on trying to be not like anyone else. Linux is for losers that have nothing better to do with their time than to fuck with a Windows clone. If you had real balls, you would be using only DOS.

Grow up, you wrasslin' watching fuck.

Linux was born as a "prompt " OS, like DOS. It is still based on Unix. The windows clone ( X ) was added later.

Also Linux servers are faster and more reliable than Win based ones.

:)

StillBecomingApart 10-15-2002 12:27 PM

Oh, my OS:

Work: Win 2000 PRO

Work Test Server: Linux Red Hat (7.3?)

Home: Win 98 SECOND EDITION!!!!

lol.

I have reasons to back up my "faggot" opinions. Linux doesn't crash. My machines stay up for weeks at a time.

Windows is bloated & uses more resources than it has to. Makes your hardware not seem as fast as it should.

Unix has been around since long before DOS, you stupid fuck. DOS is a unix clone for pussies like yourself.

Linux is the largest collaborative project in the history of the world. There are millions of programmers working on it all the time, instead of the thousands of Microsoft programmers working on Windows OS's. When there's a problem with Linux, it gets fixed. When there's a problem with windows, you live with it.

Buying windows is like buying a car with the hood welded shut. You probably have no fucking clue how configurable everything in linux is. I run it not because I want to be cool and alternative, but because it's genuinly a better product.

Isn't that worth all of the troubles of not being able to run most programs? Having to dick around with peripherals that hardly ever work? Way to go, fag. My XP box has been up for about three weeks now. And seriously, rebooting really isn't a problem. I can handle a reboot over fucking with a driver any day.

Moron.

Peripherals work.. I've got a cd burner, dvd-rom drive, digital 5.1 surround sound card, zip 250 usb drive, 56k modem, etc.. and all worked fine without installing any drivers or messing with them.

And about your "not being able to run most programs" argument. www.winehq.com - run windows programs under linux. and while you may not want to run windows programs under linux, it comes with its own stuff that gets the job done just as well. xcdroast = cd burning. openoffice = ms office clone (compatable w/all office documents). gaim = aim client. kmail/pine/mutt = email clients. opera/mozilla/netscape = browsers. You can even run your precious Internet Explorer in linux with wine. I could go on forever, but I'm talking to a brick wall.

I-Pod - Difficult to get to work properly on Linux. No I-Tunes support.
Most digital cameras.

Point: It's not worth the headache.

You're right, it isn't quite "there" yet with the multimedia stuff yet, and it never will be until manufacturers start providing native linux support. That won't happen until more people start using it.. only time will tell, I guess.

Affect 10-15-2002 01:35 PM

Yeah, that probably won't ever happen. Because, like me, most people aren't going to hassle with the headache.

Affect 10-15-2002 01:55 PM

You can change the way XP looks. Its by far the most customizable version of Windows. Have you tried updating your sound card drivers?

I'm dual booting XP Pro SP1 (for general usage) and 2000 Pro SP3 (for video capture only) on my main pc.
My secondary pc which I use only for audio editing and transfers is running 2000 Pro SP3. Both systems are rock-solid. Fuck that Linux bullshit.
