Ha, Cubs fans you're screwed: Sosa caught with corked bad, ejected

Sosa ejected after cork is found in shattered bat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay right when umpires found cork in his shattered bat.

The Cubs had runners at second and third when Sosa broke his bat with a grounder to second that at first appeared to drive in a run.

But crew chief Tim McClelland gathered with the other three umpires to examine the bat. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out and the umpires showed the bat to him.

Mark Grudzielanek was sent back to third base, the run was wiped off the board and Sosa was ejected as he stood in the dugout.

------------
You'd think he'd know better. Oh well, that's what the prick deserves. He's a stuck-up motherfucker.

I don't know the physics of it, because I'm a dumb ass, but the ball goes farther when you cork your bat, i.e. Sammy hits more home runs.

2 purposes: It has more give and natural "spring" to it than wood, and the bat is much lighter, thus the batter is able to generate more bat speed and hit the ball farther.

it's the cubs, we're always screwed.

Too bad they were playing better when he was injured.

This is an entertaining story. I can't wait to see the press clips from after the game. See how good of a liar he can be.

Sosa will say the bat is usually used in home run hitting exhibitions but somehow it got mixed in with his game bats. He says he has never used a corked bat in a major league game before tonight.

the bat being lighter isn't really an advantage, nor a reason to cork. each player uses the weight of his choice, and understands that heavier bats are going to add more power to their swings.

anyhow, the MLB has his other 10 bats from the dugout. if those are corked, which he's said they are not, then he's fucked. however, if they are all legal and no other corked bat is found...i think he'll get by this fairly easily. also, it was noted there was a large "C" printed on the tip of the bat (you could see this on espn), let's see what that stands for once the investigation is over. Chicago, Cubs, Corked...who knows, but if it does mean corked you'd have to think he's not stupid enough to try and get away w/ a corked bat that has an obvious marking on it saying so.

at the same time, i guess you could add to this that he's fresh off the D/L and had been struggling in his last couple of games.

it's all too early to speculate much on this, really.

what about the diving dunn catch. that was pretty sweet.

guz 06-04-2003 02:15 PM

on the flip side, the cubs were actually playing really well before Sosa came off the D/L. let's see how they play during his impending suspension.

Why Am I So Ugly? 06-04-2003 02:21 PM

the cubs dont really need him anyways. its their pitching that has them in 1st place
