I'm getting my wisdom teeth out on Thursday
Words of caution? Advice? Horror stories? I have little to no idea of what to expect.
|
I was horrified when they took mine out, because they didn't knock me all the way out. They gassed me and gave me novocaine. So I was out of it, mind you...but when I could hear my teeth cracking out of my skull? That almost made me throw up.
I was so drugged up they had to leave me in a room for around an hour, then a nurse half my height and my mother carried me out to the van. I couldn't walk. When I got home I went right to sleep, but it was a rude awakening a few hours later to have my mouth leaking with blood out of the gauze and the pain...holy shit. That hurt much worse than anything I have ever been through. I took vicodin and it helped. The holes that are in your gums after is really gross. They stitch them up but it feels fucking disgusting. |
I got all four of mine pulled early last month, and it was really no big thang. bled a lot for the first few hours after, but as long as you abstain from sucking, drinking with a straw, etc. (I'm sure they will tell you in detail) you should be fine.
They put me completley under and what felt like two seconds later I was being wheeled out to my mom's car. good luck! |
Yeah, I'm getting put completely under. I made sure of that.
|
My dentist told me I needed to get mine pulled this summer. I need to find an oral surgeon in memphis that takes my insurance first
|
oh and they give you hydrocodine or vicodin so use them wisley!! They really help with the pain but you will probably be lounging/napping around the house for a day or three after.

You should be fine then, swelling lasts about 5 days. You get to eat pudding and ice cream and yogurt and bad things. |
How groggy and out of it do you feel afterward? My boyfriend is going with me and we're taking the bus there, but I'm assuming we'll have to take a cab back.
|
it was the most surreal experience of my life.
yes, that is sad. |

I guess im hardcore, i just got my mouth numbed and didnt get knocked out
even then the operation wasnt bad. Just kind of boring. The pain wasnt so bad afterwards either. The only thing i was afraid of was them severing the nerve im my jaw. Its a possible complication that can happen to people, and if it does, theres a chance you could lose feeling in your lower lip/chin/tongue forever spooky |

Apparently I only have three wisdom teeth. My dentist said that he had five. I don't know how common it is, but it's cheaper for me, so that's fine. |
I've had gas before, that wasn't pleasant. And I threw up on the way home. But I had some other teeth out, and I had those done under local which wasn't bad. The whole 'cracking teeth' thing was weird, but the worst part was seeing the dentist (who was a pretty well-built guy) jumping around shaking his arm like he'd just had an unsuccessful attempt at opening a pickle jar, because he couldn't get them out. "You have to finish the job!" I said. I probably said 'AAAAHMAMAAAAMAH!' or something.
Sorry you were right :( |
you will feel kinda spacey (i liked it though) and woozy. make sure you aren't driving, which you aren't, so you should be fine.
ummm...you might have to go get the prescription drugs filled afterwards, but you may want to do that quickly because once the numbness wears off, you are going to want to pop one of those suckers RIGHT AWAY. They may do it differently where you are getting the surgey though. |

When I had mine taken out, I had both the IV and the gas, but I could hear them talking midway through the procedure. They were talking about their weekend, it was like I was eavesdropping, hee hee.
Anywho, I could not close my mouth the rest of that day because my lower jaw was completely numb, so my mom had to feed me juice and stuff from a spoon. That was fun. The next few days I had puffy cheeks, then yellow spots started to appear on my face. :erm The drugs were cool though. |
when i had mine taken out they gave me an IV ....and i just remember waking up asking where the fuck i was
i had no swelling, and the pain was minimal |
like twilightfadez, i had a similarly uneventful experience. If you have a good surgeon, they should give you a shot which minimizes swelling. no more chipmunk-cheeked people around. I personally would've been ok to take a bus back, but it's different for everybody. I don't remember much of the ride back, but i was fully functional other than that (from what i was told). I had NO pain afterwards and only took the vicodin once because it didn't do shit for me.
|
i got jerked off while i was put under.

My brother did that too, I laughed at him. He also was super fucked up after he woke up, and he insisted on going to IHOP on the way home. |
When, exactly, is the cutoff age for wisdom teeth to emerge? I'm currently 18 and I only have a couple (seen in mouth x-rays), which are apparently still pretty much well below the surface.
I mean, I have a right dandy time getting cavities filled and such, but I am scared shitless of the whole wisdom teeth ordeal. What if I don't want my goddamn wisdom teeth taken out, when and if they do finally emerge? I did have an extra baby tooth grow once which I had to have taken out, though. It was like my body was trying to fill in the gap I had in my mouth or something. That was bizarre. It looked like a fang protruding from my gum. :) |

Some people don't have to have them removed, maybe you're one of the lucky ones. The procedure isn't that big of a deal anyway. |
the dentist is going to rape u when you are put under.

Im almost 20 and i just got mine out with no problems. Im pretty sure as long as you get them out right when they come in, you are fine. Because at that time, your jaw is still developing, so any damage the dentist does will easily be repaired by your body. However, if you are in your 30s, your wisdom teeth and jaw bone are fully developed, so if there are any complications that arise, your body wont be able to handle it as well. Just get them out when you are young i guess. Theres really not much to be worried about. |
