netphoria abstainance contest

I was thinking about this. I came to the conclusion that I;m addicted to Netphoria. Forwhatever reason, I don't know, but there are times where I prioritize time spent on netphoria over much more important things. This, obviously, isn't very healthy at all. I'm pretty sure this is the case with a lot of you.

I've tried quitting cold turkey before but that only lasted a month at most. I tired of the fact that Netphoria is pretty much the only thing I do on the internet. I mean, I peruse some livejournals every now and then and look at porn, but a netphoria window is ALWAYS open. It's really sad, because in all the time I'm spending I really could be doing something a lot more enriching, like reading, exercising or practising.

So, I wanted to try something a little bit different for myself and anyone else who wants to get involved. We could throw a little friendly competition into the mix and actually make leaving netphoria a litle more effective. I can't even remember all the times people (including me) have posted "I'M LEAVING!!!" only return within the next week.

I've set up a thread on Netphoria's Livejournal where you can document your progress by simply replying to the thread. The link is here. I highly suggest you bookmark it, as extra replies won't bump the entry back up to the top of the livejournal. If you don't have a livejournal account, just reply anonymously and sign with your netphoria name. Try to keep your replies reasonably spaced. Replying daily at first, but try to make them last frequent as time passes. If you so much as read the netphoria messageboard, you MUST post to declare that you lost.

The contest officially begins Tomorrow, May 31st at 12pm EST unless anyone has any complaints about it, which I'm sure you don't.

Sign up in this thread by noon tomorrow and that's it. No more netphoria.

Oh, and one last thing, the most important thing about this whole thing is the honor system. Don't be a douchebag and lie about it. Seriously.

Any questions?

hmmm. maybe.

it will not work, so why even try?

now thats positive thinking.

jczeroman 05-30-2003 01:09 PM

tempted... but what else would I do at work? work?

melombar 05-30-2003 01:16 PM

I cannot believe that this place is that terrible of an addiction. Posting on a message board is a hard thing for me to classify as a problem. Why is not posting here such a pressing problem? If it helps pass the time, I don't see a huge deal.

Then again, I feel no need to quit. Maybe I'm an addict.

i was just talking to my shrink about netphoria yesterday...she was amazed at how people formed such strong bonds and communities over the net
and then i told her that i thought that the majority of people here had some sort of social issues or problems (including myself) and that's why we seek the net so much
but yeah, i wonder how many of us here actually do have social anxiety and issues of that sort

I'd say 90%. Not that I'm in the 10% that doesn't...

KrazeeStacee 05-30-2003 01:58 PM

You've thought about this way too hard, its actually convincing. Somehow, that seems a bit sad.

I dunno, its kinda like my smoking habits...

Some days I'll be extra bored and end up smoking almost 2 packs in a day, others I'll only smoke 5 cigarettes, sometimes I try to quit, knowing it won't happen, but I make it a few days without having one.

But in the end I know I'll never quit, and I'm okay with that.

STFU 05-30-2003 02:00 PM

I'm in the ninety percentile.

shaniqua 05-30-2003 02:10 PM

i won't be on sunday or monday! woo!

bonsor 05-30-2003 02:11 PM

From what I gather, I think you would post on the Netphoria LiveJournal community.

Call me crazy, but I really don't quite see the point of a lj community based around a message board.

Lie 05-30-2003 02:23 PM

You guys are gonna get addicted to the Live Journal.

You people have severe problems. You want to stop posting on a messageboard, but you can't do it?

Find a hobby. Christ.

Haha. ZeroDivide was so mad that people had a good time in Chicago.

yep

FearFactory 05-30-2003 02:34 PM

I leave on my own accord. Sometimes I'll just stop posting but still read topics and sometimes I just don't visit the board at all. I call those days happy days.

I'll never announce it publicly, though I may mention it to a couple people.

Mr. Rhinoceros 05-30-2003 02:35 PM

I leave on a whim.

guz 05-30-2003 03:06 PM

i post from work whenever i'm not exactly busy....so there's no point to this. when i have things to do, i do them.

maybe it's time for you to step away and find yourself a life?

Well I mean until he's born, I won't quit coming here. I have plenty of free time on my hands now, all I do is go to school a few hours a day. I'm sure I'll be absent after he's born, I won't have a minute of free time and if i do it'll be spent sleeping.
