Breastfeeding Now Considered Pornographic (MLP)

America - land of the free. And to guarantee that freedom, everyone has to be constantly watchful. Like the photo store clerk from Eckerd who dutifully reported a Peruvian-born couple's lewd shots of their infants to the Richardson (Dallas/Texas suburbs) police. The photos showed the parents' two infants bathing naked, lying together in bed with their mother (again naked) and the 1-year-old Rodrigo suckling his mother's (naked) breast. So the couple was arrested -- the maximum prison sentence for the crime in question being 20 years -- and the children taken away. Thomas Korosec has the details in his Dallas Observer article.

Its ridiculous to charge people for breastfeeding, true. But, personally, its just not cool to be sitting at the mall or outside and some broad whips her tit out and the kid starts sucking on it. I don't think it should be illegal or even a fine for doing it in public, but I think its just rude. Common courtesy and all.

sawdust restaurants 05-29-2003 01:55 AM

That's ridiculous. We should form our own SWAT team and free the kids.

Lie 05-29-2003 01:57 AM

It's a conspiracy set up by the makers of infant formula.

King of Devious 05-29-2003 01:57 AM

That story is terrible. Its things like that that make me really hate america and people who are ultra conservative

well *I* think it's common courtesy to feed your baby when he's hungry, regardless of the fact that a few narrowminded people might be standing near. seriously, it's not a sexual thing, it's FOOD. it's feeding your child. it's the same thing as a bottle, only BETTER for the baby like one hundred fold.

I would just rather bottle the milk if I know I'm going to be out, or find a semi-secluded place, instead of in the middle of a bookstore or something. You can somewhat plan ahead.

Next thing you know it will be illegal to have sex in public.

murgle 05-29-2003 06:20 PM

I remember reading that article when it came out.
Did they have the follow up online? I read in the Observer a month or so later that they returned one of the children, but not the other one... I think...

It's absolutely ridiculous.

crescentfresh 05-29-2003 06:25 PM

Some stores provide breast feeding areas. Also, it's not that difficult to pump your breast milk, and keep it in a bottle for when you go out. But I find nothing wrong with it. When my mother had my half-sister, she was always very discreet, yet still breast fed her in public. A blanket and a stealthy move can do wonders, no one sees your boob.

Either take the kid to the bathroom, or bring a bottle. To find a bathroom isn't that hard. Or find a corner secluded corner. Don't be sitting on a park bench in the middle of the city in the middle bench breast feading your kid in front of the fountain. no matter how you cut that, its rude. Common courtesy does not extend to whipping lactating tits out in public.

personally, i'm not going to STAND in a smelly bathroom for a half hour. you don't have to stare, y'know. i don't think it's something to be ashamed about. if you don't like it, don't look. i'm not saying i'm going to walk around topless and squirt milk at people, but I'm not going to go stand in a dark corner or a freakin' bathroom.

interestingly enough, i work at a bookstore, and we have a policy where we are not allowed to tell any nursing mother that she isn't allowed to do so in the store. Apparently there was a lawsuit at some point in time, so now the moms can milk to their hearts content right in the middle of the bookstore.

crescentfresh 05-30-2003 12:54 PM

once again, please use a blanket. it is really disgusting to see a woman walking around with her white, vein-laden boob handing out.

Eve 05-30-2003 01:01 PM

my boobs aren't white or vein-laden. so am i okay, then? maybe i'll get a little bit of a tan first.

LACTATING GIRLS GONE WILD!

I hate to beat this into the ground, however I’m not debating the sanctity of motherhood here, nutritional content of breast milk, or even thinking that it’s a sexual thing or not. I’m just saying that there is a lot of people who would not feel comfortable in that situation. Old people, young kids and just random people. There are other avenues, such as using a breast pump, which is what they’re there for. And I know being a mom not always time to milk yourself in downtime and when the kid has to be fuckin fed the kid has to be fuckin fed, no questions. I think using a blanket is perfectly acceptable. I know moms everywhere won’t be squirting breast milk or yelling out “Yahhooo! Look at me! I’m a mom!” But what I think is being done is that feeding one’s kid takes priority to everyone in the general vicinity and I think that’s inconsiderate of others. I know people can look away and won’t be starring but its not even giving people the option of not being exposed to is where the deal trips up. Its like “This is my kid, this is my tit, this is me breast feeding, learn to fuckin deal”, which I don’t think is considerate other people.

noir cat 05-30-2003 07:40 PM

Oh my god, what the fuck.
I didn't really read this whole post or the whole article, but what the fuck. It seems that the people took these photos in innocence and it is those people who reported them and who are giving the parents shit that have the dirty minds. This makes me really angry. It even says the pictures don't really show much skin. And what the hell is wrong with people breast feeding in public? In some countries, it's okay for women to go around baring their breasts (some places in Africa for ex). Women have been breast feeding kids for ages. IT IS NOT PORN, IT IS NOT WRONG, IT IS NOT DIRTY, IT SHOULD NOT BE SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF.

Some think it's a beautiful thing, and although I don't understand it myself, I do understand that it's a connection that the mother has with their kid/s, and I think it is outright terrible that others would think it is something to be ashamed of and to make it something other than it is.
